Solving the "Russian Sound" Mystery
Many learners are shocked when they first hear Portuguese from Portugal. It sounds fast, muffled, and even somewhat Slavic or Russian. This is due to stress-timing and vowel reduction.
At PortuStories, we train your ear to decode these "swallowed vowels" by reading with audio for every sentence, so you can understand people in Lisbon, Porto, and beyond.
How a story works
Every story is written for one CEFR level, from A1 to C2, and is built around one verb that it uses again and again. You read it in European Portuguese with an English translation for every paragraph, and you can listen to each sentence, read by a European Portuguese voice.
Tap any word to see what it means in that sentence, not just its first dictionary entry. Each story ends with a glossary of its key words, and most come with a conjugation table and a short quiz for their verb.
