A2 — Elementary

A2 European Portuguese stories (elementary)

87 stories

A2 is where the stories start to tell you what happened. You meet the pretérito perfeito for finished events (comeu, foi, disse) and the imperfeito for what used to happen or was going on (comia, era, dizia). Many A2 stories retell or continue an A1 story in the past, so you can watch familiar sentences change tense.

The settings are the ones you meet living in Portugal: getting a NIF at the Finanças, taking a ticket at the Loja do Cidadão, renting a flat in Coimbra, booking an appointment through SNS 24, calling 112, a delayed flight to Porto, discovering fado in the streets of Alfama. The vocabulary is still controlled, but the sentences are longer.

Read the Portuguese first and look at the English only when you are stuck; the glossary covers the new words. If the past tenses are new to you, start with Mateus Tinha Fome and the other retold stories, and compare each one with its A1 version. When you can follow an A2 story without the translation, try B1.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.
