A Janela

Marta mora num apartamento em Lisboa, no Príncipe Real. O seu quarto tem uma janela grande que dá para o prédio em frente. Há três semanas que ela vê uma figura parada na janela do segundo andar desse prédio — sempre às duas da manhã, sempre no mesmo sítio.

Marta lives in an apartment in Lisbon, in Príncipe Real. Her room has a large window looking out onto the building opposite. For three weeks she has been seeing a figure standing in the second-floor window of that building — always at two in the morning, always in the same spot.

A figura não se mexe. É alta e usa uma roupa escura. Marta começa a sentir-se assustada. Fecha as persianas à noite. Mas às duas da manhã abre-as sempre um bocadinho para ver se a figura ainda está lá. Está sempre.

The figure does not move. It is tall and wears dark clothing. Marta starts to feel frightened. She closes the shutters at night. But at two in the morning she always opens them a little to see if the figure is still there. It always is.

Uma tarde, Marta decide investigar. Vai ao prédio em frente e fala com a porteira. "Segundo andar? Ah, é a loja de roupa," diz a porteira. "Estão a fazer obras. Fecharam há um mês." Marta sobe as escadas. A porta da loja está fechada, mas há uma janela com um estore meio aberto.

One afternoon, Marta decides to investigate. She goes to the building opposite and speaks to the caretaker. "Second floor? Oh, that's the clothes shop," says the caretaker. "They're doing renovations. It's been closed for a month." Marta goes upstairs. The shop door is closed, but there is a window with a blind half-open.

Vê pela janela. No interior da loja, um manequim alto de roupa está colocado mesmo à beira da janela — preto, rígido, imóvel. A luz do candeeiro da rua ilumina-o de noite exactamente às duas da manhã. Marta ri-se muito. Volta para casa e escreve uma mensagem à mãe: "Boa notícia. O fantasma é de plástico."

She looks through the window. Inside the shop, a tall clothing mannequin is placed right beside the window — black, rigid, motionless. The street lamp illuminates it at night at exactly two in the morning. Marta laughs a great deal. She goes home and writes a message to her mother: "Good news. The ghost is made of plastic."

Nessa noite, às duas da manhã, Marta abre as persianas uma última vez. O manequim ainda está lá. Marta sorri, fecha as persianas e dorme bem pela primeira vez em três semanas.

That night, at two in the morning, Marta opens the shutters one last time. The mannequin is still there. Marta smiles, closes the shutters and sleeps well for the first time in three weeks.
