A Última Carta

A Lurdes tem setenta e dois anos e vive no Porto. O seu neto Diogo foi para Londres há três anos a trabalhar. A avó Lurdes envia-lhe uma carta todos os meses. Escreve sobre o tempo, sobre os vizinhos e sobre as receitas que faz ao domingo.

Lurdes is seventy-two years old and lives in Porto. Her grandson Diogo went to London three years ago for work. Grandmother Lurdes sends him a letter every month. She writes about the weather, about the neighbours and about the recipes she makes on Sundays.

Diogo nunca responde. Ele diz que está muito ocupado. A avó não se queixa. Continua a enviar as suas cartas, mês após mês. Um dia, Diogo recebe um telefonema do hospital: a avó está doente.

Diogo never replies. He says he is very busy. His grandmother does not complain. She keeps sending her letters, month after month. One day, Diogo receives a phone call from the hospital: his grandmother is ill.

Diogo vai ao Porto. No quarto da avó, encontra uma caixa de madeira. Dentro estão todas as suas cartas — e também outras cartas que ele nunca enviou. São as respostas imaginárias que a avó escreveu para ele: "Querida avó, hoje fui ao Tâmisa..."

Diogo goes to Porto. In his grandmother's bedroom, he finds a wooden box. Inside are all her letters — and also other letters he never sent. They are the imaginary replies his grandmother wrote for him: "Dear grandmother, today I went to the Thames..."

Diogo chora muito. Quando a avó fica melhor, ele senta-se à mesa e escreve a sua primeira carta de verdade. A partir desse dia, envia uma carta todas as semanas.

Diogo cries a great deal. When his grandmother gets better, he sits down at the table and writes his first real letter. From that day on, he sends a letter every week.

A avó Lurdes lê cada palavra com os seus óculos novos e sorri. "Finalmente," pensa ela, "as cartas chegam nos dois sentidos."

Grandmother Lurdes reads every word with her new glasses and smiles. "Finally," she thinks, "the letters travel in both directions."
