A Turista Tímida

Sofia chegou ao Porto numa tarde de outubro. Era a primeira vez que visitava Portugal e estava muito entusiasmada, mas também nervosa. O problema era que Sofia não sabia falar português. Sabia algumas palavras em espanhol e inglês, mas no Porto as pessoas falavam principalmente português. Sofia tinha medo de perguntar e não perceber a resposta.

Sofia arrived in Porto on an October afternoon. It was the first time she had visited Portugal and she was very excited, but also nervous. The problem was that Sofia did not know how to speak Portuguese. She knew some words in Spanish and English, but in Porto people mainly spoke Portuguese. Sofia was afraid to ask and not understand the answer.

Sofia saiu do aeroporto com a mala de rodas e olhou para o telemóvel. O hotel ficava no centro do Porto, perto da Ribeira. Mas como é que ia lá chegar? Havia o metro, o autocarro, o táxi. Sofia não sabia qual era a melhor opção. Queria perguntar a alguém, mas as palavras não saíam. Ficou parada no meio do passeio, a olhar para o mapa.

Sofia came out of the airport with her wheeled suitcase and looked at her mobile phone. The hotel was in the centre of Porto, near the Ribeira. But how was she going to get there? There was the metro, the bus, the taxi. Sofia did not know which was the best option. She wanted to ask someone, but the words would not come out. She stood still in the middle of the pavement, looking at the map.

Uma senhora de casaco vermelho parou ao lado dela. — Precisa de ajuda? — perguntou a senhora em português. Sofia percebeu que a senhora lhe perguntava se precisava de ajuda. Fez um sinal com a cabeça e disse, muito devagar: — Metro... centro... hotel? A senhora sorriu e começou a explicar.

A lady in a red coat stopped beside her. "Do you need help?" asked the lady in Portuguese. Sofia understood that the lady was asking her if she needed help. She nodded and said, very slowly: "Metro... centre... hotel?" The lady smiled and began to explain.

A senhora mostrou-lhe onde ficava a estação de metro mais próxima e qual era a linha certa. Sofia agradeceu e foi. No metro, perguntou ao cobrador se estava no caminho certo para o centro. O cobrador respondeu em português rápido. Sofia não percebeu tudo, mas percebeu que sim. Começou a relaxar um pouco. Perguntar não era assim tão difícil.

The lady showed her where the nearest metro station was and which was the right line. Sofia thanked her and went. On the metro, she asked the ticket inspector if she was on the right way to the centre. The inspector replied in fast Portuguese. Sofia did not understand everything, but she understood that she was. She started to relax a little. Asking was not that difficult after all.

No hotel, Sofia deixou a mala e saiu para explorar. Tinha fome e queria almoçar. Entrou numa tasca pequena na Rua das Flores. O empregado perguntou-lhe o que queria. Sofia olhou para o menu mas não percebeu nada. Perguntou, com o dedo a apontar para o menu: — O que é... típico? Português? O empregado ficou contente com a pergunta e recomendou uma francesinha.

At the hotel, Sofia left her suitcase and went out to explore. She was hungry and wanted to have lunch. She went into a small tasca on Rua das Flores. The waiter asked her what she wanted. Sofia looked at the menu but did not understand anything. She asked, pointing her finger at the menu: "What is... typical? Portuguese?" The waiter was happy with the question and recommended a francesinha.

Depois do almoço, Sofia quis visitar a Livraria Lello, que é famosa no mundo inteiro. Perguntou a um senhor na rua como se ia lá. O senhor perguntou-lhe de onde era. Sofia disse que era da Alemanha. Ele perguntou se falava inglês e os dois continuaram a conversa em inglês. O senhor explicou-lhe o caminho com muita paciência.

After lunch, Sofia wanted to visit Livraria Lello, which is famous all over the world. She asked a man on the street how to get there. The man asked her where she was from. Sofia said she was from Germany. He asked if she spoke English and the two of them continued the conversation in English. The man explained the way with great patience.

Na livraria, Sofia comprou um guia de Portugal em alemão. Mas depois decidiu que queria também aprender português. Perguntou à funcionária se havia dicionários de português para estrangeiros. A funcionária perguntou qual era a sua língua materna e trouxe dois livros diferentes. Sofia comprou os dois com um sorriso enorme.

At the bookshop, Sofia bought a guide to Portugal in German. But then she decided she also wanted to learn Portuguese. She asked the shop assistant if there were Portuguese dictionaries for foreigners. The shop assistant asked what her mother tongue was and brought two different books. Sofia bought both of them with a huge smile.

No final do dia, Sofia foi ver o pôr do sol no Jardim do Morro, em Gaia, com vista para a Ribeira e para a Ponte Dom Luís. Havia muitas outras pessoas ali. Uma rapariga portuguesa perguntou-lhe se queria que tirasse uma fotografia. Sofia disse que sim e agradeceu. Depois, a rapariga perguntou de onde era e as duas ficaram a conversar durante uma hora.

At the end of the day, Sofia went to watch the sunset at Jardim do Morro, in Gaia, with a view of the Ribeira and the Dom Luís Bridge. There were many other people there. A Portuguese girl asked her if she wanted her to take a photo. Sofia said yes and thanked her. Then the girl asked where she was from and the two of them chatted for an hour.

A rapariga chamava-se Marta e era estudante de Erasmus no Porto. Falava inglês, espanhol e um pouco de alemão. Perguntou a Sofia se queria visitar a cidade no dia seguinte com ela e com os amigos. Sofia ficou surpreendida com a generosidade. Perguntou se não era demasiado incómodo. Marta disse que não, que adorava mostrar o Porto aos visitantes.

The girl's name was Marta and she was an Erasmus student in Porto. She spoke English, Spanish and a little German. She asked Sofia if she wanted to visit the city the next day with her and her friends. Sofia was surprised by the generosity. She asked if it was not too inconvenient. Marta said no, that she loved showing Porto to visitors.

Nessa noite, no hotel, Sofia escreveu no diário. Escreveu que aprendera uma lição importante: perguntar não era sinal de fraqueza, era sinal de coragem. No Porto, as pessoas tinham ajudado cada vez que ela perguntara. O Porto estava cheio de gente boa disposta a ajudar. E tudo começava com uma simples pergunta.

That night, at the hotel, Sofia wrote in her diary. She wrote that she had learned an important lesson: asking was not a sign of weakness, it was a sign of courage. In Porto, people had helped every time she had asked. Porto was full of good people willing to help. And it all started with a simple question.

No dia seguinte, Sofia foi passear com Marta e os amigos. Perguntou muitas coisas ao longo do dia — o nome dos monumentos, a história dos azulejos, como se preparava o vinho do Porto. E todas as perguntas levaram a novas conversas, novas histórias, novas amizades. Sofia partiu de volta à Alemanha com um caderno cheio de palavras em português e o coração cheio de memórias do Porto.

The next day, Sofia went for a walk with Marta and her friends. She asked many things throughout the day — the names of the monuments, the history of the azulejos, how port wine was prepared. And every question led to new conversations, new stories, new friendships. Sofia left back to Germany with a notebook full of Portuguese words and her heart full of memories of Porto.
