Leonor era estudante de História na Universidade de Coimbra. Adorava a disciplina, lia todos os livros, fazia todos os apontamentos. Mas havia um problema: quando o professor fazia uma pergunta na aula, Leonor nunca respondia. Sabia sempre a resposta, mas o coração acelerava, as mãos suavam, e as palavras ficavam presas na garganta. Era como se responder em público fosse impossível.

Leonor was a History student at the University of Coimbra. She loved the subject, read all the books, made all her notes. But there was a problem: when the professor asked a question in class, Leonor never answered. She always knew the answer, but her heart would race, her hands would sweat, and the words would get stuck in her throat. It was as if answering in public was impossible.

O professor Doutor Ramos era conhecido por fazer perguntas difíceis. Era um homem de cabelos brancos que ensinava na faculdade há trinta anos. As suas aulas eram fascinantes mas intimidantes. Professor Doutor Ramos was known for asking difficult questions. He was a white-haired man who had been teaching at the faculty for thirty years. His classes were fascinating but intimidating. When he looked at the class and asked a question, the students got nervous. Most answered something wrong or stayed silent. Leonor always stayed silent.

The professor looked directly at Leonor. "Leonor, do you know the answer? I notice you have read the material. Please answer." Leonor felt her heart race. She wanted to answer but her voice would not come out. She looked down at the desk. The professor waited. The whole class was looking at her. After a long moment, Leonor answered in an almost imperceptible voice: "There was a general strike scheduled for that day. It was the perfect cover for the movement."

O professor ficou quieto um momento. Depois respondeu: — Exatamente. É uma das respostas mais completas que já ouvi sobre este tema. Obrigado, Leonor. A turma virou-se para ela. Alguns alunos assentiam com a cabeça. Leonor sentiu as bochechas a ficarem vermelhas, mas também sentiu algo estranho e novo: orgulho. Tinha respondido. E estava correta.

The professor was quiet for a moment. Then he replied: "Exactly. That is one of the most complete answers I have ever heard on this topic. Thank you, Leonor." The class turned to look at her. Some students nodded. Leonor felt her cheeks going red, but she also felt something strange and new: pride. She had answered. And she was right.

Depois da aula, uma colega chamada Beatriz foi ter com ela no corredor. — Leonor, a tua resposta foi incrível! Por que é que nunca respondes nas aulas? Sabes sempre tudo! — Tenho medo de responder errado — disse Leonor, encolhendo os ombros. — Mas respondeste certo! Tens de responder mais vezes.

After class, a classmate named Beatriz came to find her in the corridor. "Leonor, your answer was incredible! Why do you never answer in class? You always know everything!" "I'm afraid of answering wrong," said Leonor, shrugging. "But you answered correctly! You have to answer more often."

Nessa semana, Leonor foi à biblioteca estudar. Continuava a preparar-se para as aulas mas agora pensava também em como ia responder às perguntas do professor. Ensaiava as respostas em voz alta no quarto, sozinha. No início sentia-se ridícula a falar sozinha, mas depois começou a gostar. A sua voz ficava mais firme cada vez que respondia, mesmo que fosse só para o espelho.

That week, Leonor went to the library to study. She continued preparing for classes but now she also thought about how she would answer the professor's questions. She rehearsed the answers aloud in her room, alone. At first she felt ridiculous talking to herself, but then she began to like it. Her voice became firmer every time she answered, even if it was just to the mirror.

Na aula seguinte, o professor perguntou sobre o Estado Novo. Desta vez, Leonor não esperou. Respirou fundo e respondeu com clareza: "O Estado Novo foi um regime autoritário que durou de 1933 a 1974, sob a liderança de Oliveira Salazar e depois de Marcello Caetano. Controlava a imprensa, proibia partidos políticos e limitava as liberdades individuais." A turma ficou impressionada. O professor sorriu.

In the next class, the professor asked about the Estado Novo. This time, Leonor did not wait. She took a deep breath and answered clearly: "The Estado Novo was an authoritarian regime that lasted from 1933 to 1974, under the leadership of Oliveira Salazar and then Marcello Caetano. It controlled the press, banned political parties and limited individual freedoms." The class was impressed. The professor smiled.

O professor Ramos ficou depois da aula e chamou Leonor. — Leonor, tenho notado que responde muito melhor nas últimas aulas. Quero propor-lhe algo: há uma apresentação oral da faculdade em março. Gostava que respondesse às perguntas do painel. Acho que está pronta. Leonor engoliu em seco. Uma apresentação oral perante toda a faculdade? Isso era diferente de responder na aula.

Professor Ramos stayed after class and called Leonor. "Leonor, I have noticed that you answer much better in recent classes. I want to propose something to you: there is an oral presentation at the faculty in March. I would like you to answer the panel's questions. I think you are ready." Leonor swallowed hard. An oral presentation in front of the whole faculty? That was different from answering in class.

Leonor respondeu que precisava de pensar. Nessa noite, falou com a mãe pelo telemóvel. A mãe disse: "Leonor, sempre soubeste responder. O problema nunca foi o que sabias — era o que acreditavas que sabias." Leonor pensou nessas palavras durante muito tempo. No dia seguinte, respondeu ao professor que aceitava.

Leonor replied that she needed to think. That evening, she spoke with her mother on the mobile. Her mother said: "Leonor, you always knew how to answer. The problem was never what you knew — it was what you believed you knew." Leonor thought about those words for a long time. The next day, she replied to the professor that she accepted.

No dia da apresentação, Leonor subiu ao palco com o coração acelerado. O painel fez perguntas difíceis. Leonor respondeu a cada uma com calma e precisão. Quando desceu do palco, a turma aplaudiu. On the day of the presentation, Leonor went up to the stage with her heart racing. The panel asked difficult questions. Leonor answered each one with calm and precision. When she came down from the stage, the class applauded. Professor Ramos nodded. Beatriz hugged her. Leonor understood that her voice — the voice that had always been there — had finally found its place.
