Os Três Príncipes e a Donzela

Era uma vez três príncipes que eram grandes amigos. Um dia, ao passarem juntos por uma rua, viram uma donzela muito bonita a olhar pela janela. Os três ficaram apaixonados por ela ao mesmo tempo, sem que nenhum soubesse dos sentimentos dos outros. Um deles procurou uma ocasião em que pudesse ir sozinho pedir-lhe quando poderia voltar a falar com ela. A donzela disse-lhe para vir às dez da noite.

Once there were three princes who were great friends. One day, as they walked together along a street, they saw a very beautiful maiden looking out of a window. All three fell in love with her at the same time, without any of them knowing of the others' feelings. One of them sought a moment when he could go alone to ask her when he could come to speak with her again. The maiden told him to come at ten in the evening.

O segundo príncipe foi também pedir-lhe o mesmo favor, e ela marcou-lhe as onze da noite. O terceiro príncipe fez o mesmo pedido e a donzela disse-lhe que o esperaria à meia-noite. Às dez chegou o primeiro; às onze o segundo; e à meia-noite veio o terceiro e encontrou ali os outros dois. "Tratas todos da mesma maneira porque não gostas de nenhum", disse ele. A donzela respondeu que gostava muito dos três. Um dos príncipes disse então que ela só podia casar com um e que escolhesse. A donzela voltou a dizer que não fazia exceções e que os três lhe agradavam muito.

The second prince also went to ask her the same favour, and she set him at eleven in the evening. The third prince made the same request and the maiden told him she would expect him at midnight. At ten the first arrived; at eleven the second; and at midnight the third came and found the other two there. "You treat all three the same because you do not care for any of us," he said. The maiden replied that she liked all three very much. One of the princes then said she could only marry one and that she should choose. The maiden again said she made no exceptions and that all three pleased her greatly.

Como os três príncipes estavam prestes a partir numa longa viagem, a donzela decidiu por fim que, ao regressarem, cada um lhe traria uma lembrança, e que aquele cujo presente ela mais gostasse seria o escolhido. Os três despediram-se dela prometendo trazer os presentes combinados. Quando já tinham viajado algum tempo, chegaram a uma encruzilhada e separaram-se, prometendo encontrar-se ali de volta no fim das suas viagens.

As the three princes were on the eve of undertaking a long journey, the maiden decided at last that on their return each would bring her a keepsake, and the one whose gift she liked best would be chosen. The three took their leave of her, promising to bring the agreed gifts. When they had already travelled some distance, they reached a crossroads and separated, promising to meet there again at the end of their journeys.

O primeiro príncipe chegou a um país onde viu muita gente a entrar na loja de um carpinteiro. Foi ver o que se passava e encontrou um espelho maravilhoso: bastava dizer "espelho, quero ver tal pessoa" para ela aparecer imediatamente refletida. O príncipe comprou-o logo e disse para si próprio: "Encontrei o presente perfeito para a minha amada." O segundo príncipe chegou a outro país onde viu muita gente a comprar uma vela. Perguntou por que razão todos queriam tanto aquela vela insignificante, e disseram-lhe que tinha uma propriedade misteriosa: se alguém estivesse morto e lhe pusessem a vela nas mãos, ressuscitava imediatamente. O príncipe comprou-a e disse: "Encontrei um presente valioso para a minha amada."

The first prince arrived in a country where he saw many people entering a carpenter's shop. He went to see what was happening and found a marvellous mirror: one had only to say "mirror, I want to see such a person" for them to appear immediately reflected in it. The prince bought it at once and said to himself: "I have found the perfect gift for my beloved." The second prince arrived in another country where he saw many people buying a candle. He asked why everyone was so eager for that insignificant candle, and they told him it had a mysterious property: if someone was dead and the candle was placed in their hands, they would revive immediately. The prince bought it and said: "I have found a valuable gift for my beloved."

O terceiro príncipe viu noutro país um homem a vender tapetes de lã. Pediu uma quantia muito grande por um tapete em particular. O príncipe perguntou por que razão esse tapete era tão mais caro do que os outros. O homem respondeu que aquele tapete tinha uma propriedade especial: quem quisesse fazer uma viagem bastava estendê-lo no chão, pôr-se em cima e dizer "ó tapete, leva-me a tal lugar num instante" para ser transportado imediatamente. O príncipe comprou-o com alegria e disse: "Encontrei um tesouro digno de ser oferecido à minha amada."

The third prince saw in another country a man selling woollen rugs. He asked a very large sum for one rug in particular. The prince asked why that rug cost so much more than the others. The man replied that this rug had a special property: whoever wished to make a journey had only to spread it on the ground, stand on it and say "oh rug, take me to such a place in an instant" to be transported there at once. The prince bought it with joy and said: "I have found a treasure worthy of being offered to my beloved."

Quando os três príncipes se encontraram na encruzilhada, mostraram-se mutuamente os presentes. O que tinha o espelho disse aos outros: "Ordeno ao espelho que me mostre a minha amada." Olharam para o espelho e viram a donzela morta. O que tinha a vela exclamou: "Oxalá pudéssemos colocar-lhe esta vela nas mãos para ela ressuscitar!" O que tinha o tapete estendeu-o no chão: "Tapete, leva-nos os três num instante até onde ela está!" Em poucos momentos os três príncipes encontravam-se ao lado da donzela morta. Colocaram-lhe a vela nas mãos e ela ressuscitou de imediato.

When the three princes met at the crossroads, they showed each other their gifts. The one with the mirror said to the others: "I order the mirror to show me my beloved." They looked into the mirror and saw the maiden dead. The one with the candle exclaimed: "If only we could place this candle in her hands so she would come back to life!" The one with the rug spread it on the ground: "Rug, take all three of us in an instant to where she is!" In a few moments the three princes found themselves beside the dead maiden. They placed the candle in her hands and she revived at once.

Os três ficaram muito contentes com o resultado, mas logo cada um começou a apresentar as suas razões. O que tinha a vela disse que, sem ela, a donzela nunca teria voltado à vida. O que tinha o espelho argumentou que, se ele não a tivesse visto no espelho, nunca teriam sabido que ela estava morta. O que tinha o tapete retorquiu que, sem ele, não teriam chegado a tempo; e que, em comparação com o seu tapete, os outros presentes eram inúteis. A discussão foi ficando cada vez mais acesa.

The three were very pleased with the outcome, but each at once began to put forward his claims. The one with the candle said that without it the maiden would never have come back to life. The one with the mirror argued that if he had not seen her in the mirror, they would never have known she was dead. The one with the rug retorted that without it they would not have arrived in time; and that compared to his rug, the other gifts were useless. The argument grew ever more heated.

A donzela ouviu toda a discussão e avançou para o centro. Disse-lhes que, como todos os três tinham direito a casar com ela, e como não podia ter três maridos ao mesmo tempo, não casaria com nenhum. Era esta a sua resposta: não uma recusa por falta de amor, mas a impossibilidade de uma escolha justa quando todos três tinham sido igualmente indispensáveis para a salvar.

The maiden listened to the whole argument and stepped forward to the centre. She told them that since all three had a right to marry her, and since she could not have three husbands at the same time, she would marry none of them. This was her answer: not a refusal out of lack of love, but the impossibility of a fair choice when all three had been equally indispensable in saving her.

A donzela fechou-se numa torre e os três príncipes, muito tristes e desiludidos, retiraram-se também para uma torre sombria. E o enigma ficou sem resposta para sempre: qual dos três príncipes merecia realmente a mão da donzela? O que a viu morta, o que a trouxe de volta à vida, ou o que a levou a tempo de ser salva? Cada um que ouve a história há de responder de maneira diferente — e talvez seja esse o verdadeiro segredo que a história guarda.

The maiden shut herself in a tower and the three princes, very sad and disappointed, also withdrew into a gloomy tower. And the riddle was left unanswered forever: which of the three princes truly deserved the maiden's hand? The one who saw her dead, the one who brought her back to life, or the one who carried them there in time to save her? Everyone who hears the story will answer differently — and perhaps that is the true secret the story keeps.
