O Carraço

Era uma vez dois irmãos e uma irmã que viviam juntos na pobreza. Certo dia, os dois irmãos disseram à irmã que tencionavam partir a tentar a sorte pelo mundo. Ela pediu-lhes que voltassem ao fim de um ano. Puseram-se a caminho por uma estrada longa e direita, e chegaram a um lugar onde havia dois caminhos estreitos. Despediram-se um do outro e separaram-se, combinando encontrar-se naquele mesmo lugar ao fim de um ano. O mais velho foi trabalhar como criado numa quinta, e o mais novo caminhou até avistar um palácio muito antigo.

Once there were two brothers and a sister who lived together in poverty. One day, the two brothers told their sister that they intended to set out and try their luck in the world. She asked them to come back at the end of a year. They set off along a long straight road and came to a place where there were two narrow paths. They bade each other farewell and separated, agreeing to meet at the same spot at the end of a year. The eldest went to work as a labourer on a farm, and the youngest walked on until he spotted a very old palace.

Como não tinha onde ficar para a noite, entrou no palácio e ficou admirado com o esplendor que havia lá dentro, apesar de o lugar estar deserto. Desejou jantar e imediatamente apareceu uma mesa com uma excelente ceia. Depois da ceia, apareceu uma boa cama para ele descansar. Quando adormeceu, acordou de repente a sentir algo frio e mole que se aproximava dele na cama. Na primeira noite ficou muito assustado, mas com o tempo habituou-se e deixou de ter medo. Todas as noites aquela presença desconhecida chegava à sua cama e conversava longamente com ele.

Since he had nowhere to stay for the night, he entered the palace and was amazed at the splendour within, despite the place being deserted. He wished for dinner and immediately a table appeared with an excellent supper. After supper, a good bed appeared for him to rest. When he fell asleep, he suddenly awoke feeling something cold and soft approaching him in the bed. On the first night he was very frightened, but in time he grew accustomed and stopped being afraid. Every night that unknown presence would come to his bed and converse at length with him.

Quando passou um ano, disse à presença desconhecida que tinha de ir encontrar-se com o irmão para voltarem juntos para casa. Ela deixou-o ir e, na noite seguinte, deu-lhe um fato novo completo, algum dinheiro e um cavalo. O jovem partiu e percorreu o caminho até ao ponto de encontro combinado. Chegou lá antes do irmão. Quando o irmão chegou, o jovem reparou que as suas mãos estavam ásperas e calejadas do trabalho duro, enquanto as suas eram lisas e brancas, pois não trabalhara durante o ano inteiro.

When a year had passed, he told the unknown presence that he had to go meet his brother so they could return home together. She let him go and, the following night, gave him a complete new suit of clothes, some money, and a horse. The young man set off and made his way to the agreed meeting point. He arrived before his brother. When his brother arrived, the young man noticed his hands were rough and calloused from hard work, while his own were smooth and white, for he had not worked during the entire year.

Foram a casa e a irmã ficou deliciada ao vê-los. Quando voltaram a partir, ela deu a cada um uma libra de linho para fiar, dizendo que deveriam trazê-lo fiado ao fim de um ano. O irmão mais novo chegou ao palácio e contou à presença desconhecida — que não era outra senão um carraço — que a irmã lhe dera tanto linho para fiar e trazer pronto ao fim de um ano. O carraço disse que era uma tarefa muito fácil e que não havia por que se preocupar tão cedo. Mas quando o prazo estava quase a acabar, o jovem pediu-lhe que fiasse o linho. O carraço produziu imediatamente o linho lindamente fiado, arrumado com todo o cuidado. Deu-lhe também mais um fato, dinheiro e um cavalo.

They went home and the sister was delighted to see them. When they set off again, she gave each of them a pound of flax to spin, saying they should bring it spun back at the end of a year. The youngest brother arrived at the palace and told the unknown presence — who was none other than a tick — that his sister had given him so much flax to spin and bring ready at the end of a year. The tick said it was a very easy task and there was no need to worry about it so soon. But when the deadline was nearly up, the young man asked her to spin the flax. The tick immediately produced the flax beautifully spun and neatly packed. She also gave him another suit, money, and a horse.

Quando os dois irmãos se encontraram no lugar combinado, o mais velho trazia o linho mal fiado, de cor amarela feia e mal enrolado. O mais novo trazia o seu num cestinho delicado. A irmã, ao ver a diferença, ficou muito admirada. Na partida seguinte, a irmã deu a cada um um cachorrinho para criar e pedir de volta ao fim de um ano. O irmão mais velho voltou com um cão enorme e poderoso que o seguia. O mais novo voltou com o seu num pequeno cesto, arrumado e confortável — era a forma que o carraço tinha usado para o guardar e criar.

When the two brothers met at the agreed spot, the eldest carried his flax very badly spun, of an ugly yellow colour and loosely rolled. The youngest carried his in a small dainty basket. The sister, upon seeing the difference, was very astonished. On the next departure, the sister gave each of them a puppy to raise and bring back at the end of a year. The eldest returned with a very large powerful dog that followed him. The youngest returned with his in a small basket, neatly and comfortably packed — it was the form the tick had used to keep and raise it.

A irmã ficou contente ao ver os dois cães. Disse-lhes que na próxima vez que regressassem, cada um devia trazer uma esposa, pois queria conhecer as cunhadas. O irmão mais velho disse que estava prometido à filha do seu patrão. O mais novo não sabia o que dizer, pois só conhecia o carraço. Despediram-se e cada um tomou o seu caminho. O irmão mais novo chegou ao palácio e contou ao carraço o que a irmã esperava que fizesse. O carraço perguntou-lhe se queria casar com ela. Ele respondeu: "Mas és tão pequenina!" O carraço disse-lhe que não se preocupasse com isso.

The sister was pleased to see both dogs. She told them that next time they returned, each must bring a wife, for she wished to meet her sisters-in-law. The eldest said he was promised to his master's daughter. The youngest did not know what to say, for he only knew the tick. They bade each other farewell and each took his road. The youngest arrived at the palace and told the tick what his sister expected him to do. The tick asked him if he would like to marry her. He replied: "But you are so very tiny!" The tick told him not to worry about that.

No dia do casamento, o palácio resplandeceu com um esplendor nunca visto, cheio de pajens, damas de companhia, e o carraço transformou-se numa princesa lindíssima vestida de noiva. As carruagens estavam prontas para a comitiva e partiram todos para a terra da irmã. Uma carruagem de gala levou também o irmão mais velho e a sua noiva. Quando a procissão chegou ao lugar de encontro, o irmão mais velho estava lá com uma mulher da arraia miúda dos arrabaldes de Lisboa, de saias curtas. Entraram na carruagem e chegaram a casa da irmã com grande pompa.

On the wedding day, the palace shone with a splendour never seen before, full of pages and ladies-in-waiting, and the tick transformed into a most beautiful princess dressed as a bride. The carriages were ready for the procession and they all set off for the sister's country. A state carriage also took the eldest brother and his bride. When the procession reached the meeting place, the eldest brother was there with a common woman from the outskirts of Lisbon, wearing short skirts. They got into the carriage and arrived at the sister's house with great pomp.

Os dois irmãos casaram com as suas noivas numa grande cerimónia. Depois das festas, regressaram ao palácio do carraço, que era uma princesa encantada. A princesa contou então ao marido a história do encantamento que a prendera naquela forma minúscula durante tantos anos, e de como a sua paciência e bondade a tinham libertado. E todos viveram muito felizes a partir desse dia, no palácio que um carraço chamara de lar.

The two brothers married their brides in a grand ceremony. After the festivities, they returned to the palace of the tick, who was an enchanted princess. The princess then told her husband the story of the enchantment that had kept her in that tiny form for so many years, and how his patience and kindness had freed her. And they all lived very happily from that day on, in the palace that a little tick had once called home.
