Os Dois Filhos e a Bruxa

Era uma vez uma mulher que tinha um filho e uma filha. Um dia enviou os dois filhos pela estrada fora dizendo: "Ide até onde encontrardes cascas de feijão no caminho, e quando chegardes à floresta encontrar-me-eis lá a apanhar lenha." As crianças foram seguindo o rasto das cascas, mas não encontraram a mãe nem na floresta nem em sítio nenhum. Quando a noite caiu, viram ao longe uma luz e caminharam na sua direção.

Once there was a woman who had a son and a daughter. One day she sent both children along the road saying: "Go as far as you find bean shells on the path, and when you reach the forest you will find me there gathering firewood." The children went following the trail of shells, but found their mother neither in the forest nor anywhere else. When night fell, they saw a light in the distance and walked towards it.

Chegaram a uma velha que estava a fritar bolos. A velha era cega de um olho. O rapaz foi pelo lado cego e roubou um bolo, com tanta fome que tinha. A velha, pensando que era o gato, disse: "Ladrão de gato, deixa os meus bolos em paz, não são para ti!" O rapaz disse à irmã: "Vai tu agora." A menina respondeu: "Não posso, que me rio de certeza." Mas o irmão insistiu e ela lá foi, pelo lado cego da velha. Roubou um bolo — e logo se pôs a rir às gargalhadas.

They came upon an old woman who was frying cakes. The old woman was blind in one eye. The boy went to her blind side and stole a cake, so hungry was he. The old woman, thinking it was the cat, said: "You thieving cat, leave my cakes alone, they are not for you!" The boy said to his sister: "Now you go." The girl replied: "I cannot, I shall certainly laugh." But her brother insisted and off she went, to the old woman's blind side. She stole a cake — and immediately burst out laughing.

A velha voltou-se e viu as duas crianças. Disse logo, com uma voz adocicada que não prometia nada de bom: "Ah, são vocês, meus queridos netos! Comam, comam e engordem!" Agarrou neles e meteu-os numa grande caixa cheia de castanhas. Fechou-a. No dia seguinte veio à boca da caixa e disse: "Mostrem-me os dedos, meus queridos, para ver se já estão gordos." As crianças mostraram os dedos. No dia seguinte a bruxa voltou a pedir os dedos. Desta vez as crianças mostraram-lhe a cauda de um gato que tinham encontrado dentro da caixa.

The old woman turned around and saw the two children. She said at once, with a honeyed voice that promised nothing good: "Ah, it is you, my dear grandchildren! Eat, eat and grow fat!" She grabbed them and shoved them into a large box full of chestnuts. She shut them in. The following day she came to the mouth of the box and said: "Show me your fingers, my dears, to see if you are fat yet." The children showed their fingers. The next day the witch came to ask for the fingers again. This time the children showed her the tail of a cat they had found inside the box.

"Meus queridos, podeis sair, já estais gordos e rechonchudos." Tirou-os da caixa e disse-lhes para a acompanhar a apanhar lenha. As crianças foram por um lado e a bruxa pelo outro. Numa clareira encontraram uma fada que lhes disse: "Ide apanhar lenha para aquecer o forno, mas não sabeis que a velha quer cozer-vos nele. Ela vai dizer-vos para vos sentardes na pá de padeiro. Pedi-lhe que se sente primeiro, para aprenderdes como se faz."

The old woman said: "My dears, you may come out now, you are nice and plump." She took them out of the box and told them to accompany her to gather firewood. The children went one way and the witch another. In a clearing they found a fairy who told them: "You are gathering firewood to heat the oven, but you do not know that the old woman wants to bake you in it. She will tell you to sit on the baker's peel. Ask her to sit on it first, so you can learn how it is done."

A fada desapareceu e pouco depois encontraram a bruxa na floresta. Juntaram toda a lenha em molhos e levaram-na para casa para aquecer o forno. Quando o forno estava bem quente, a bruxa varreu-o com cuidado e disse com um sorriso: "Sentai-vos aqui na pá, meus queridos, para eu ver como dançais dentro do forno!" As crianças responderam tal como a fada as tinha instruído: "Senta-te tu primeiro, avozinha, para aprendermos como se faz."

The fairy vanished and shortly afterwards they found the witch in the forest. They bundled all the firewood together and carried it home to heat the oven. When the oven was well heated, the witch swept it out carefully and said with a smile: "Sit here on the peel, my dears, so I can see you dance inside the oven!" The children replied just as the fairy had instructed them: "You sit first, granny, so we can learn how it is done."

A bruxa, querendo aliciá-los a fazerem o mesmo depois, sentou-se na pá. No instante em que as crianças a viram sentada, empurraram a pá para dentro do forno com toda a força. A bruxa deu um grande salto e ficou reduzida a cinzas de imediato. As crianças tomaram conta da casa e de tudo o que lá havia. E nunca mais voltaram a ter fome nem a ter medo do escuro da floresta.

The witch, wanting to coax them into doing the same afterwards, sat on the peel. The instant the children saw her seated, they thrust the peel into the oven with all their strength. The witch gave a great start and was reduced to ashes immediately. The children took possession of the house and everything it contained. And they never again went hungry or feared the darkness of the forest.
