O Filho Preguiçoso do Padeiro

Era uma vez uma padeira que tinha um filho muito preguiçoso. Enquanto os outros rapazes da aldeia iam ao bosque apanhar lenha, ele ficava em casa a não fazer nada. A mãe desolava-se com aquele filho sem préstimo e não sabia o que havia de fazer com ele.

Once there was a woman baker who had a very lazy son. While the other boys from the village went to the woods to gather firewood, he stayed at home doing nothing. The mother was distressed by that useless son and did not know what to do with him.

Um dia, depois de muito insistir, a mãe conseguiu que o filho fosse com os outros rapazes. Chegados ao bosque, enquanto os companheiros trabalhavam a apanhar ramos e gravetos, ele foi deitar-se à beira de um riacho e pôs-se a comer o que trouxera de casa. Enquanto comia, um peixe aproximou-se a comer as migalhas que caíam na água.

One day, after much insistence, the mother managed to get her son to go with the other boys. Arriving at the woods, while his companions worked gathering branches and twigs, he went to lie down beside a stream and began eating what he had brought from home. As he ate, a fish approached to eat the crumbs falling into the water.

Sem grande esforço, o rapaz apanhou o peixe com a mão. O peixe suplicou-lhe que não o matasse, prometendo conceder-lhe todos os desejos que tivesse. O rapaz, desconfiado, decidiu pôr o peixe à prova: pediu-lhe que aparecesse diante dele um feixe de lenha maior do que os dos outros rapazes, e que esse feixe andasse sozinho pelo caminho sem que ninguém o visse a ele debaixo. No mesmo instante, o feixe apareceu já atado, e o rapaz soltou o peixe para o riacho.

Without much effort, the boy caught the fish with his hand. The fish begged him not to kill it, promising to grant him any wish he had. The boy, suspicious, decided to test the fish: he asked for a bundle of firewood larger than those of the other boys to appear before him, and for that bundle to walk along the road by itself without anyone seeing him underneath it. At that very instant the bundle appeared already tied, and the boy released the fish back into the stream.

Ao passar em frente ao palácio real com o feixe a mover-se sozinho, o rei, que estava à janela com a princesa, ficou muito admirado. A princesa, ao ver aquela coisa estranha, achou tanta graça que começou a rir às gargalhadas. O rapaz, ao ouvir o riso da princesa, lembrou-se das palavras do peixe e murmurou o seu desejo em voz baixa: que a princesa ficasse grávida sem que ninguém soubesse de quem era o filho.

Passing in front of the royal palace with the bundle moving on its own, the king, who was at the window with the princess, was very astonished. The princess, seeing that strange thing, found it so amusing that she burst out laughing. The boy, hearing the princess's laughter, remembered the fish's words and murmured his wish under his breath: that the princess would become pregnant without anyone knowing whose child it was.

Passados alguns meses, a princesa começou a mostrar sinais de gravidez, e o rei ficou muito desgostoso. Mandou fechar a filha numa torre com as suas damas de companhia. Ao fim de algum tempo nasceu um menino, e o rei não conseguia perceber de onde vinha aquela criança.

After a few months, the princess began to show signs of pregnancy, and the king was very displeased. He had his daughter locked in a tower with her ladies-in-waiting. After some time a baby boy was born, and the king could not understand where that child had come from.

Entretanto, o rapaz preguiçoso voltou ao riacho e o peixe apareceu-lhe, informando-o do nascimento do filho. Guiado pelo peixe e pelas fadas, o rapaz mandou construir um palácio mais esplêndido do que o do rei. O palácio tinha jardins cheios de flores de todas as cores e um pomar maravilhoso onde crescia uma laranjeira com doze laranjas de ouro. Tudo isto foi obra do peixe e das fadas. Transformado em príncipe, o rapaz instalou-se naquele palácio e ninguém o reconhecia como o filho da padeira.

Meanwhile, the lazy boy returned to the stream and the fish appeared to him, informing him of the birth of his son. Guided by the fish and the fairies, the boy had a palace built more splendid than the king's. The palace had gardens full of flowers of every colour and a marvellous orchard where a golden-orange tree grew with twelve golden oranges. All this was the work of the fish and the fairies. Transformed into a prince, the boy moved into that palace and no one recognised him as the baker's son.

O rei, ao ouvir falar do esplendor daquele palácio, mandou pedir para o visitar. O novo príncipe convidou-o a si e a toda a corte para um magnífico pequeno-almoço. Ao chegarem, o rei e os seus camaristas ficaram maravilhados com o luxo e a riqueza que viam. Percorreram o palácio todo e desceram ao jardim, onde se encantaram com as flores e, acima de tudo, com a laranjeira de laranjas douradas. O anfitrião avisou-os de que podiam apanhar tudo o que quisessem no jardim, exceto as laranjas de ouro.

The king, hearing of the splendour of that palace, sent word asking to visit it. The new prince invited him and the entire court to a magnificent breakfast. On arriving, the king and his chamberlains were amazed by the luxury and wealth they saw. They toured the whole palace and went down to the garden, where they were enchanted by the flowers and, above all, by the golden-orange tree. Their host warned them that they could take anything they wished from the garden, except the golden oranges.

Quando o rei se preparava para partir, o anfitrião disse-lhe, com toda a cortesia, que estranhava que, depois de tanta hospitalidade, alguém houvesse apanhado uma das laranjas de ouro. Os cortesãos negaram todos, tiraram os casacos e mostraram que não tinham nada. Só o rei ainda não tinha sido examinado. Contrariado, o rei tirou o casaco e os bolsos pareciam vazios; mas o anfitrião pediu-lhe que tornasse a ver com atenção, pois visto que não fora nenhum cortesão, só podia ter sido o próprio rei. O rei enfiou novamente a mão no bolso e tirou de lá a laranja de ouro, completamente envergonhado, sem perceber como lá fora parar.

When the king was preparing to leave, the host said to him, with all courtesy, that he found it strange that after so much hospitality someone had taken one of the golden oranges. All the courtiers denied it, took off their coats and showed they had nothing. Only the king had not yet been examined. Reluctantly, the king removed his coat and the pockets appeared empty; but the host asked him to look carefully once more, since as it had been none of the courtiers, it could only have been the king himself. The king put his hand into his pocket again and drew out the golden orange, completely ashamed, unable to understand how it had got there.

O anfitrião disse-lhe então que o mesmo havia acontecido com a princesa, que ficara grávida sem que ninguém soubesse de quem. Com estas palavras, o feitiço que aprisionava o peixe ficou desfeito, e ele transformou-se num príncipe e casou com a princesa. O filho da padeira voltou para casa um homem rico, e toda a aldeia ficou maravilhada com o que o rapaz preguiçoso tinha conseguido com a sua esperteza e a ajuda de um peixe encantado.

The host then told him that the same thing had happened to the princess, who had become pregnant without anyone knowing whose child it was. With these words, the spell binding the fish was broken, and it transformed into a prince and married the princess. The baker's son returned home a rich man, and the whole village marvelled at what the lazy boy had achieved through his cleverness and the help of an enchanted fish.
