Chegaram a Moncarapacho num sábado de Abril, com vinte e dois minutos de diferença. Primeiro a Sofia, no Volvo do marido, que ficou no carro a falar ao telemóvel sobre uma reunião na segunda-feira em Coimbra. Depois o Rui, de táxi vindo do aeroporto de Faro, com uma mala demasiado grande para uma tarde e um casaco demasiado bom para a casa onde tinha crescido. O Nuno já lá estava há duas horas. Tinha aberto as janelas, posto água ao lume e arejado os quartos. Vivia em Olhão, a quinze minutos, e tinha as chaves há anos. Não disse isso. Não fazia questão. Quando os irmãos entraram no quintal, debaixo da alfarrobeira velha, ele estava a regar os manjericos da mãe como se ela ainda fosse aparecer à porta a perguntar se já tinham comido.

They arrived in Moncarapacho on a Saturday in April, twenty-two minutes apart. Sofia first, in her husband's Volvo, who stayed in the car on the phone about a meeting on Monday in Coimbra. "Já estás a tratar das coisas", disse a Sofia, beijando-o nas duas faces sem o olhar a sério. "Sabes que não precisavas de vir tão cedo, Nuno. Podíamos ter combinado." "Combinámos. Ficou às três. Eu vim mais cedo para abrir as janelas. A casa cheirava a fechado." O Rui pousou a mala na entrada e olhou em volta. Não tinha pisado aquela cozinha há três anos. A mesa era a mesma, com a marca da panela de barro a queimar a esquina esquerda desde 1998. "Ainda tem a mesma toalha", disse ele. "Ela gostava dessa toalha." "Eu sei", disse o Nuno. "Lavei-a ontem." Houve um silêncio em que o Rui pareceu querer dizer alguma coisa e depois decidiu não dizer nada. Foi pôr a mala no quarto que tinha sido dele, e fechou a porta com mais força do que precisava.
