A Espera no Aeroporto

Miguel chegou ao aeroporto de Faro duas horas antes do previsto. Era sempre assim com ele: quando esperava por algo importante, chegava cedo. Detestava a ideia de chegar atrasado e perder o momento. Hoje era um dia especial. O seu irmão André ia regressar do Brasil depois de dez anos. Miguel estava nervoso e ao mesmo tempo cheio de esperança.

Miguel arrived at Faro airport two hours ahead of schedule. It was always like this with him: when he was waiting for something important, he arrived early. He hated the idea of arriving late and missing the moment. Today was a special day. His brother André was coming back from Brazil after ten years. Miguel was nervous and at the same time full of hope.

Miguel sentou-se num banco perto das chegadas internacionais. O aeroporto estava cheio de gente. Havia famílias com cartazes coloridos, crianças a correr, turistas com malas grandes. Toda aquela gente esperava por alguém ou por alguma coisa. Miguel olhou para o painel das chegadas e viu: o voo do Brasil tinha um atraso de três horas. O coração apertou-lhe.

Miguel sat down on a bench near the international arrivals. The airport was full of people. There were families with colourful signs, children running, tourists with large suitcases. All those people were waiting for someone or something. Miguel looked at the arrivals board and saw: the flight from Brazil was delayed by three hours. His heart sank.

Três horas. Miguel suspirou. Ia ter de esperar mais. Levantou-se e foi buscar um café ao balcão. Enquanto esperava pela bebida, o telemóvel vibrou. Era uma mensagem de André: "Mano, o voo atrasou. Não sei se vou conseguir sair do Brasil. Há um problema com o passaporte. Espera por mim, por favor." Miguel releu a mensagem três vezes. Não sabia o que pensar.

Three hours. Miguel sighed. He was going to have to wait longer. He got up and went to get a coffee at the counter. While he was waiting for the drink, his mobile phone vibrated. It was a message from André: "Bro, the flight is delayed. I don't know if I'll be able to leave Brazil. There's a problem with my passport. Wait for me, please." Miguel re-read the message three times. He did not know what to think.

Miguel voltou para o banco e ficou a olhar para o tecto. Lembrou-se de quando André foi embora, dez anos atrás. Era um dia frio de fevereiro e os dois estavam no mesmo aeroporto, mas do outro lado — nas partidas. André esperava pelo embarque com a mochila às costas e um olhar de quem ia mudar de vida. Miguel esperava que o irmão ficasse, mas sabia que era impossível.

Miguel went back to the bench and stared at the ceiling. He remembered when André left, ten years ago. It was a cold day in February and the two of them were in the same airport, but on the other side — at departures. André was waiting to board with his backpack on his shoulders and the look of someone about to change their life. Miguel had hoped his brother would stay, but he knew it was impossible.

Nos primeiros anos, os dois falavam todos os domingos pelo telefone. Depois, as chamadas foram ficando mais curtas e menos frequentes. A vida no Brasil era agitada. André arranjou trabalho, depois uma namorada, depois uma casa. Miguel ficou em Faro, na mesma rua, na mesma casa dos pais. Esperava sempre por notícias do irmão com uma mistura de alegria e saudade.

In the first years, the two talked every Sunday on the phone. Then the calls became shorter and less frequent. Life in Brazil was busy. André found work, then a girlfriend, then a house. Miguel stayed in Faro, on the same street, in the same house as his parents. He always waited for news from his brother with a mixture of joy and longing.

Passaram duas horas. Miguel comeu uma sandes de queijo e bebeu mais um café. Continuava a esperar. O painel das chegadas ainda não mostrava o voo do André. Miguel enviou uma mensagem ao irmão a perguntar o que se passava. Esperou por uma resposta durante vinte minutos. Nada. Estava a ficar preocupado.

Two hours passed. Miguel ate a cheese sandwich and had another coffee. He continued to wait. The arrivals board still did not show André's flight. Miguel sent a message to his brother asking what was happening. He waited for a reply for twenty minutes. Nothing. He was getting worried.

De repente, o telemóvel tocou. Era André. — Mano! Estou no avião! Resolveram o problema do passaporte. Espera por mim! Aterramos em quarenta minutos! Miguel respirou fundo e sorriu. — Estou aqui, irmão. Estou à tua espera. Há dez anos que espero por este dia.

Suddenly, the mobile rang. It was André. "Bro! I'm on the plane! They sorted out the passport problem. Wait for me! We land in forty minutes!" Miguel took a deep breath and smiled. "I'm here, brother. I'm waiting for you. I've been waiting for this day for ten years."

Os quarenta minutos pareceram uma eternidade. Miguel levantou-se e foi até às portas das chegadas internacionais. Havia mais pessoas à espera agora — uma mãe com um bebé ao colo, um casal de idosos, um grupo de jovens com cartazes. Toda aquela espera coletiva tinha algo de bonito. Cada pessoa ali esperava com o coração cheio.

The forty minutes felt like an eternity. Miguel stood up and went to the international arrivals doors. There were more people waiting now — a mother with a baby in her arms, an elderly couple, a group of young people with signs. All that collective waiting had something beautiful about it. Every person there was waiting with a full heart.

As portas abriram-se. Saíram as primeiras pessoas do voo do Brasil. Miguel esticou o pescoço para ver melhor. E então viu: André. Mais velho, com barba, mas com o mesmo sorriso de sempre. André também o viu e acenou com a mão. Os dois irmãos encontraram-se no meio da multidão e abraçaram-se durante muito tempo, sem dizer nada.

The doors opened. The first people from the Brazilian flight came out. Miguel craned his neck to see better. And then he saw him: André. Older, with a beard, but with the same smile as always. André also saw him and waved. The two brothers found each other in the middle of the crowd and hugged for a long time, saying nothing.

— Valeu a pena esperar? — perguntou André com um sorriso. — Sempre vale a pena esperar pelas coisas que importam — respondeu Miguel. Os dois riram e saíram do aeroporto juntos, em direção ao sol de Faro.

"Was it worth waiting?" asked André with a smile. "It's always worth waiting for the things that matter," replied Miguel. The two of them laughed and left the airport together, heading towards the Faro sun.

Nessa noite, a família reuniu-se na casa dos pais. A mãe tinha cozinhado o prato preferido de André: cataplana de marisco. Esperaram todos juntos à mesa antes de começar a comer, como um ritual. Esperaram também que André contasse tudo sobre o Brasil, sobre a vida que tinha construído longe de casa. E Miguel, que esperara dez anos, estava finalmente em paz.

That evening, the family gathered at the parents' house. Their mother had cooked André's favourite dish: seafood cataplana. They all waited together at the table before starting to eat, like a ritual. They also waited for André to tell them everything about Brazil, about the life he had built far from home. And Miguel, who had waited ten years, was finally at peace.
