C2 — Mastery

C2 European Portuguese stories (mastery)

7 stories

The C2 stories close the library. The prose is dense and literary, close to contemporary Portuguese fiction and essay writing, and at around a thousand words each they are, on average, the longest stories on the site.

They range widely. A scholar in sixteenth-century Lisbon questions the morals of the maritime expansion; an archaeologist finds a manuscript about the sacred architecture of Évora; an old librarian in Belém is forced to revisit his life's work; a sound technician searches for an old frequency in a city drowning in noise; a watcher of timelines decides whether to save a scientist; an Alentejo shepherd spends his life contemplating the plain; and one story is a reflection on language itself.

Start with O Labirinto das Palavras, the first in the learning order. If you can read these with only the occasional glance at the translation, you are reading European Portuguese at the top of the CEFR scale.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.
