Romance stories in European Portuguese

13 stories from A1 to C1

Love stories, several of them built around letters: Pedro's love letter to Sofia, a letter from a father who emigrated to Brazil twenty years earlier, a father's letters found after his funeral, old letters in the Alentejo that uncover a forbidden love.

There are chance meetings too, on the train from Lisbon to Porto and among the shelves of the Livraria Lello; Inês choosing between a job in Lisbon and Diogo in Braga; Filipa coming home to Braga after ten years in London; a woman torn between a settled life in Lisbon and a first love who comes back; a summer with old friends in the Algarve; and two former sweethearts who meet again at a conference twenty years later.

Romance is a good genre for learning how feelings are put into Portuguese. The genre runs from A1 to C1, with the most stories at B2. Start with Uma Carta de Amor at A1 and O Encontro no Comboio at A2.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.
