A Carta que Não Esperava

Leonor tinha quarenta e dois anos quando recebeu a carta. Estava a tomar o pequeno-almoço numa manhã de fevereiro, sozinha na sua cozinha em Braga, quando ouviu o carteiro. Levantou-se devagar, sem pressa — normalmente só recebia contas e publicidade. Mas desta vez havia um envelope diferente: amarelado, com selos brasileiros e uma caligrafia que não reconhecia. Ou talvez reconhecesse, de algum lugar muito fundo na memória.

Leonor was forty-two years old when she received the letter. She was having breakfast on a February morning, alone in her kitchen in Braga, when she heard the postman. She got up slowly, unhurried — she usually only received bills and junk mail. But this time there was a different envelope: yellowed, with Brazilian stamps and a handwriting she did not recognise. Or perhaps she did recognise it, from somewhere very deep in her memory.

Voltou para a cozinha com o envelope na mão e sentou-se. Ficou a olhar para ele durante vários minutos sem o abrir. O remetente era um nome que não ouvia desde que tinha doze anos: Augusto Monteiro. O seu pai. Tinha recebido poucas notícias dele ao longo dos anos — um cartão de natal que chegou quando ela tinha quinze, um telefonema que a mãe não deixara passar quando tinha dezassete. E depois, silêncio.

She returned to the kitchen with the envelope in her hand and sat down. She stared at it for several minutes without opening it. The sender was a name she had not heard since she was twelve: Augusto Monteiro. Her father. She had received little news of him over the years — a Christmas card that arrived when she was fifteen, a phone call her mother had not let through when she was seventeen. And then, silence.
