C1 European Portuguese stories (advanced)

33 stories

C1 stories are for readers who no longer need simplified Portuguese. The vocabulary is abstract and precise (discernir, ponderar, subverter, reivindicar), the sentences are long and the subjects are serious.

Many C1 stories follow one person thinking a question through: a retired judge on the gap between what is just and what is legal, a historian reclaiming the forgotten rural workers of the Alentejo, an archivist on why digital information is so easy to keep and so fragile, a scholar challenging the official story of Portugal's colonial past.

There is genre fiction too: an archivist who finds that files were deleted from the national archive, a defence lawyer who learns mid-trial that her client is guilty, an emergency doctor whose patient has the symptoms of a man who died in 1987, and a centre that erases memories.

Read these slowly. The English translation is there to check a difficult sentence, not to replace the Portuguese. Start with A Exposição Proibida, about an art installation at the Serralves museum in Porto that divides critics and politicians.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.

The C1 readiness test covers the future subjunctive, the pluperfect, the conditional and more. C1 readiness test →
