Na aldeia de Pitões das Júnias, no alto do Gerês, vive o velho Jerónimo. Tem noventa e dois anos e é o último Guardião das Palavras — o depositário de uma tradição oral que remonta a séculos antes da fundação de Portugal. São histórias de pastores, de lobos e de plantas medicinais, contadas sempre da mesma forma, com as mesmas palavras, transmitidas de guardião em guardião. Quando Jerónimo morrer, as palavras morrem com ele.

In the village of Pitões das Júnias, high in the Gerês mountains, lives old Jerónimo. He is ninety-two years old and is the last Guardian of Words — the keeper of an oral tradition that goes back centuries before the founding of Portugal. These are stories of shepherds, wolves and medicinal plants, always told in the same way, with the same words, passed from guardian to guardian. When Jerónimo dies, the words will die with him.

O problema é que não há sucessor. Os jovens da aldeia emigraram. Os que ficaram não têm interesse. O filho de Jerónimo vive no Porto há quarenta anos e nunca quis saber das histórias. Durante décadas, Jerónimo esperou. Agora, sabe que o tempo acabou.

The problem is that there is no successor. The young people from the village have emigrated. Those who stayed have no interest. Jerónimo's son has lived in Porto for forty years and never wanted to know about the stories. For decades, Jerónimo waited. Now, he knows that time has run out.

O candidato improvável é Tariq, um jovem de vinte e seis anos que emigrou de Marrocos há três anos e trabalha nas obras de restauro de uma quinta na margem do rio. Tariq aprende português com uma velocidade surpreendente e tem o hábito de se sentar à porta de Jerónimo ao fim do dia. "Gosto de ouvir o velho a falar," diz ele a um colega. "Não percebo metade das palavras, mas o ritmo é bonito."

The unlikely candidate is Tariq, a twenty-six-year-old who emigrated from Morocco three years ago and works on the restoration of a farmhouse on the riverbank. Tariq learns Portuguese at a surprising speed and has the habit of sitting at Jerónimo's door at the end of the day. "I like listening to the old man talk," he tells a colleague. "I don't understand half the words, but the rhythm is beautiful."

Jerónimo nota Tariq. Começa por lhe contar histórias mais simples. Tariq ouve com uma atenção que os netos de Jerónimo nunca tiveram. Faz perguntas precisas. Repete passagens em voz alta para as memorizar. "Porquê ele e não um neto?" pergunta a filha de Jerónimo durante uma visita. "Porque ele ouve," responde o velho. "Os meus netos ouviram-me. Tariq escuta-me. São coisas diferentes."

Jerónimo notices Tariq. He begins by telling him simpler stories. Tariq listens with an attention that Jerónimo's grandchildren never had. He asks precise questions. He repeats passages aloud to memorise them. "Why him and not a grandchild?" asks Jerónimo's daughter during a visit. "Because he listens," the old man replies. "My grandchildren heard me. Tariq listens to me. These are different things."

Durante dois anos, Jerónimo transmite a Tariq todas as histórias. Tariq grava-as em áudio, transcreve-as e estuda-as como se estudasse um texto sagrado. Aprende as palavras arcaicas, os nomes das plantas extintas, os nomes dos lobos que pastores mortos há cem anos lhe tinham contado. É um trabalho de arqueologia da memória.

For two years, Jerónimo transmits all the stories to Tariq. Tariq records them in audio, transcribes them and studies them as if studying a sacred text. He learns the archaic words, the names of extinct plants, the names of wolves that shepherds dead a hundred years ago had told him about. It is a work of archaeology of memory.

Quando Jerónimo morre, Tariq é reconhecido pela aldeia — sem cerimónia, sem título — como o novo Guardião. Não porque seja de lá. Porque sabe as palavras. E porque as diz com o ritmo certo. Na tradição de Pitões, essa é a única condição.

When Jerónimo dies, Tariq is recognised by the village — without ceremony, without title — as the new Guardian. Not because he is from there. Because he knows the words. And because he says them with the right rhythm. In the tradition of Pitões, that is the only condition.
