Catarina Rego recognised him before he recognised her. Twenty years had passed, but there was something in him — the way he tilted his head when looking at the slides — that was unmistakable. Nuno Azevedo. They had loved each other greatly, with the careless intensity of twenty-year-olds, and then separated with the same intensity.
They met during the break at the Urban Planning conference, in a queue for coffee. "Catarina." "Nuno." Two names said as if they were the only ones that existed. They stood looking at each other for a second that lasted much longer than a second.
They went to a table in the corner and talked for two hours, completely missing the afternoon of the conference. He was a university professor in Porto, married, two children. She was an architect in Lisbon, separated, one daughter. They told each other their lives with the efficiency of people who have little time and much to say, and with the tenderness of people who loved well and remember without regret.
There was no nostalgia of the kind that hurts. What there was was the quiet recognition that that person — that specific person — had been important, had shaped something essential in them, and that the life each had built afterwards was, in part, a consequence of that shaping. Loving someone changes us. And that change remains, even when the love is gone.
They said goodbye in the hotel lobby, with two kisses on the cheek and a handshake that lasted a second too long. "Take care, Catarina." "You too, Nuno." Neither of them suggested meeting again. Neither of them needed to. There was in that farewell a kind of completeness — like closing a book one has read well, on the right page, at the right time.
