Condicional: The Conditional Mood

The conditional mood expresses hypothetical situations, polite requests, and reported speech about future events. It is formed like the simple future but with different endings.

Add conditional endings to the full infinitive (same stem as the future). The same three irregular stems apply: fazer → far-, dizer → dir-, trazer → trar-.

Poderia trazer mais pão, por favor?

Could you bring more bread, please?

Polite request.

Se tivesse dinheiro, compraria uma casa no Alentejo.

If I had money, I would buy a house in the Alentejo.

Hypothetical: imperfect conjunctive + conditional.

💡

In colloquial EP, the conditional is frequently replaced by the imperfect (tinha instead of teria). Acceptable in speech; avoid in formal writing.
