O Que Aconteceu no Porto

A Leonor Azevedo tinha quarenta e dois anos e vivia em Lisboa, mas crescera no Porto. Voltava ao Porto poucas vezes — havia demasiadas memórias ligadas àquela cidade, algumas das quais preferia não revisitar. Mas naquele fim de semana de abril, o seu sobrinho casava no Porto e ela não podia faltar.

Leonor Azevedo was forty-two and lived in Lisbon, but had grown up in Porto. She rarely returned to Porto — there were too many memories tied to that city, some of which she preferred not to revisit. But that April weekend, her nephew was getting married in Porto and she could not miss it.

Ao sair do comboio na Estação de São Bento, Leonor parou no átrio e olhou para os azulejos azuis e brancos que contavam a história de Portugal. Acontecera aqui, pensou ela. Neste mesmo átrio, vinte anos antes, tinha acontecido algo que mudara a sua vida.

Stepping off the train at São Bento Station, Leonor stopped in the hall and looked at the blue and white tiles telling the history of Portugal. It happened here, she thought. In this very hall, twenty years ago, something had happened that had changed her life.

O que acontecera tinha sido simples na aparência: ela perdera a carteira com todos os documentos. Mas o que acontecera a seguir era o que ficara gravado na sua memória. Um homem desconhecido tinha encontrado a carteira e passara semanas a tentar devolvê-la, sem saber quem era a dona.

What had happened was simple in appearance: she had lost her wallet with all her documents. But what happened next was what had stayed engraved in her memory. An unknown man had found the wallet and spent weeks trying to return it, without knowing who the owner was.

Quando a Leonor finalmente apareceu na esquadra da polícia a queixar-se da perda, o homem — chamava-se Diogo — estava lá a entregar a carteira. Acontecera a coisa mais improvável: encontrarem-se naquele preciso instante. Tinham falado durante horas. Seis meses depois, estavam juntos. Dois anos depois, separados.

When Leonor finally appeared at the police station to report the loss, the man — his name was Diogo — was there handing in the wallet. The most improbable thing had happened: they had met at that precise moment. They had talked for hours. Six months later, they were together. Two years later, separated.

A Leonor saiu da estação e caminhou até à Ribeira. Pensava no que acontecera no fim do namoro — uma discussão sobre coisas que agora pareciam pequenas, uma separação que nunca chegara a ser explicada. Perguntava-se o que teria acontecido se tivessem tentado mais.

Leonor left the station and walked to the Ribeira. She thought about what had happened at the end of the relationship — an argument about things that now seemed small, a separation that had never been properly explained. She wondered what would have happened if they had tried harder.

No dia do casamento, aconteceu algo que ela não esperava: sentada ao lado de um convidado na cerimónia, reconheceu a voz antes de ver o rosto. Era o Diogo. Estava mais grisalho, mas o sorriso era o mesmo.

On the day of the wedding, something happened that she did not expect: seated beside a guest at the ceremony, she recognised the voice before seeing the face. It was Diogo. He was greyer, but the smile was the same.

— O que é que aconteceu contigo todos estes anos? — perguntou ela no cocktail, sem conseguir fingir indiferença. — Aconteceu a vida — respondeu ele simplesmente. — Trabalho, um casamento que não durou, dois filhos que são a melhor coisa que me aconteceu. E tu?

"What happened to you all these years?" she asked at the reception, unable to feign indifference. "Life happened," he replied simply. "Work, a marriage that didn't last, two children who are the best thing that ever happened to me. And you?"

Conversaram durante toda a recepção. Aconteceu o que acontece quando duas pessoas com história em comum se reencontram: as paredes caíram depressa. Falaram sobre o que acontecera no fim — e perceberam que ambos tinham ficado com versões diferentes da mesma história.

They talked throughout the reception. What happens when two people with a shared history meet again happened: the walls came down quickly. They talked about what had happened at the end — and realised they had each been left with different versions of the same story.

— Nunca percebi o que aconteceu — disse a Leonor. — Foste-te embora sem explicar nada. — Achei que tu querias que eu fosse — disse o Diogo. — Acontece muito isso. As pessoas supõem em vez de perguntar.

"I never understood what happened," said Leonor. "You left without explaining anything." "I thought you wanted me to go," said Diogo. "That happens a lot. People assume instead of asking."

Ao fim da noite, quando a festa terminava e os convidados iam embora, a Leonor ficou a olhar para o Douro iluminado. O que quer que aconteça daqui para a frente, pensou ela, vim ao Porto e aconteceu algo que precisava de acontecer há muito tempo: perceber o que tinha ficado por resolver.

At the end of the evening, as the party wound down and guests left, Leonor stood looking at the illuminated Douro river. Whatever happens from here on, she thought, I came to Porto and something happened that needed to happen a long time ago: understanding what had been left unresolved.

No comboio de regresso a Lisboa, a Leonor sorriu para o espelho da casa de banho do comboio. Às vezes, as coisas que acontecem na vida não têm explicação perfeita. É preciso que aceitemos que acontecem momentos que não controlamos — e que o mais importante é o que fazemos com eles depois.

On the train back to Lisbon, Leonor smiled at herself in the train bathroom mirror. Sometimes, the things that happen in life have no perfect explanation. We need to accept that there are moments we cannot control — and that what matters most is what we do with them afterwards.
