A Professora de Fado

A Dona Gracinda Saramago tinha setenta anos e ensinava fado há quarenta. Vivia na Mouraria, o bairro de Lisboa onde o fado tinha nascido, e a sua voz grave e rasgada era conhecida em todas as tascas da cidade. Ensinava numa pequena sala no primeiro andar de um prédio antigo, com paredes cobertas de fotografias a preto e branco de fadistas famosos.

Dona Gracinda Saramago was seventy and had been teaching fado for forty years. She lived in the Mouraria, the Lisbon neighbourhood where fado was born, and her deep, raspy voice was known in every tavern in the city. She taught in a small room on the first floor of an old building, with walls covered in black-and-white photographs of famous fadistas.

Uma tarde de março, uma jovem brasileira chamada Beatriz bateu à porta. Tinha vinte e três anos, estudava musicologia na Universidade Nova de Lisboa e queria aprender a cantar fado para a sua tese de mestrado.

One March afternoon, a young Brazilian woman called Beatriz knocked at the door. She was twenty-three, studying musicology at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and wanted to learn to sing fado for her master's thesis.

— Ensina-me a cantar fado — disse a Beatriz diretamente. — O fado não se ensina assim tão depressa, menina — respondeu a Dona Gracinda, sentando-se devagar na cadeira de madeira. — Primeiro ensino-te a ouvir.

"Teach me to sing fado," said Beatriz directly. "Fado isn't taught that quickly, my dear," replied Dona Gracinda, sitting down slowly. "First I'll teach you to listen."

Durante as primeiras três semanas, a Dona Gracinda não ensinou uma única nota. Ensinava a Beatriz a ouvir gravações antigas — Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza. Ensinava-lhe também a história de cada canção: quem a tinha escrito, em que época, que dor tinha por trás. A Beatriz ouvia e tomava notas, mas por vezes ficava impaciente.

During the first three weeks, Dona Gracinda did not teach a single note. She taught Beatriz to listen to old recordings — Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza. She also taught her the history of each song: who had written it, in what era, what pain lay behind it. Beatriz listened and took notes, but sometimes grew impatient.

— Quando é que me ensina a cantar de verdade? — perguntou a Beatriz numa tarde. — Já estou a ensinar-te o mais importante — disse a Dona Gracinda com calma. — O fado não é uma técnica. O fado é uma forma de sentir. Espero que percebas isso antes de abrires a boca para cantar.

"When are you going to teach me to really sing?" asked Beatriz one afternoon. "I'm already teaching you the most important thing," said Dona Gracinda calmly. "Fado is not a technique. Fado is a way of feeling. I hope you understand that before you open your mouth to sing."

Na quarta semana, a Dona Gracinda ensinava os aspetos técnicos: a postura, a respiração, a forma como a voz devia correr pelas consoantes portuguesas. Ensinava que o fado era inseparável da língua portuguesa — que as suas vogais abertas e as suas consoantes suaves eram parte do som. A Beatriz, com o sotaque brasileiro, tinha de reaprender a pronunciar alguns sons.

In the fourth week, Dona Gracinda taught the technical aspects: posture, breathing, the way the voice had to flow through Portuguese consonants. She taught that fado was inseparable from the Portuguese language — that its open vowels and soft consonants were part of the sound. Beatriz, with her Brazilian accent, had to relearn how to pronounce certain sounds.

Foi ao ensinar a pronúncia que a Dona Gracinda aprendeu algo de novo. A Beatriz perguntava-lhe porque é que os portugueses diziam certos sons daquela forma, e a Dona Gracinda, ao tentar explicar, percebeu que nunca tinha pensado naquilo conscientemente. Ensinar obrigava-a a refletir sobre o que sabia mas nunca tinha formulado.

It was while teaching pronunciation that Dona Gracinda learned something new herself. Beatriz asked her why the Portuguese said certain sounds in that way, and Dona Gracinda, trying to explain, realised she had never consciously thought about it. Teaching forced her to reflect on what she knew but had never put into words.

Dois meses depois, a Beatriz cantou a sua primeira canção de fado completa — «Estranha Forma de Vida». A voz tremia, mas havia algo verdadeiro nela. A Dona Gracinda ficou em silêncio quando a música terminou.

Two months later, Beatriz sang her first complete fado song — "Estranha Forma de Vida". Her voice trembled, but there was something genuine in it. Dona Gracinda was silent when the music ended.

— Não está perfeito — disse a Dona Gracinda por fim. — Mas está honesto. E no fado, o honesto é mais importante do que o perfeito. Ensinei-te o que pude. O resto tens de encontrar dentro de ti.

"It's not perfect," said Dona Gracinda at last. "But it's honest. And in fado, honest is more important than perfect. I've taught you what I could. The rest you have to find inside yourself."

A Beatriz abraçou a professora e agradeceu. Disse que tinha aprendido muito mais do que esperava para a tese — tinha aprendido algo sobre a alma portuguesa que os livros não conseguiam ensinar. Disse que ia ensinar aos seus colegas no Brasil o que tinha descoberto.

Beatriz hugged the teacher and thanked her. She said she had learned far more than she expected for her thesis — something about the Portuguese soul that books could not teach. She said she was going to teach her colleagues in Brazil what she had discovered.

Nessa noite, a Dona Gracinda sentou-se ao piano e tocou as mesmas canções que ensinara. Pensou que, ao ensinar a Beatriz, tinha redescoberto o fado de uma forma nova. Ensinar não era apenas transferir conhecimento — era também um caminho de volta ao que se amava. Espero que ela ensine bem, pensou. E que nunca se esqueça do que é importante.

That evening, Dona Gracinda sat at the piano and played the same songs she had taught. She thought that by teaching Beatriz, she had rediscovered fado in a new way. Teaching was not just transferring knowledge — it was also a road back to what one loved. I hope she teaches well, she thought. And that she never forgets what matters.
