European Portuguese Vocabulary Guide
Portugal has a rich cultural heritage spanning eight centuries of nationhood. From the haunting melodies of fado to the exuberant tiles of azulejaria, from the Manueline architecture of Lisbon to the literary legacy of Fernando Pessoa, Portuguese culture is distinctive and deeply felt.
Fado was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011. Lisbon's Alfama district and Coimbra each have their own distinct fado styles.
