A Língua do Outro

Luísa traduzia livros há quinze anos e compreendia inglês, francês e italiano com a mesma facilidade com que respirava — era uma capacidade que ela já não notava, como quem não nota o próprio sotaque. Mas quando lhe pediram para traduzir um romance de um autor japonês a partir do original, percebeu que havia algo que ainda não compreendia: a distância enorme entre entender as palavras e entender o que está por detrás delas. O autor usava silêncios carregados, elipses que pesavam mais do que as frases, e referências culturais que ela reconhecia intelectualmente mas não sentia. Transportar tudo isso para o português sem trair o sentido parecia, nas primeiras semanas, impossível.

Luísa had been translating books for fifteen years and understood English, French and Italian as easily as breathing — a capacity she no longer noticed, the way one does not notice one's own accent. But when she was asked to translate a novel by a Japanese author from the original, she realised there was something she still did not understand: the enormous distance between understanding words and understanding what lies behind them. The author used weighted silences, ellipses that carried more weight than sentences, and cultural references she recognised intellectually but did not feel. Carrying all of that into Portuguese without betraying the meaning seemed, in the first weeks, impossible.

Luísa começou então a estudar não só a língua mas a cultura japonesa — a estética do wabi-sabi, que valoriza a imperfeição e a efemeridade; a noção de ma, o espaço significativo entre as coisas; a importância capital do não dito. Cada semana que passava, compreendia mais e, ao mesmo tempo, sentia que havia ainda mais por compreender. Era uma sensação estranha: a competência e a humildade a crescerem em simultâneo. A tradução verdadeira exigia que ela habitasse mentalmente o mundo do autor — que compreendesse não só o que ele dizia, mas o que ele sentia ao dizê-lo, e o que ele escolhia não dizer.

Luísa then began to study not only the language but Japanese culture — the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which prizes imperfection and transience; the notion of ma, the meaningful space between things; the central importance of what is left unsaid. With each passing week, she understood more and, at the same time, felt there was even more to understand. It was a strange sensation: competence and humility growing in parallel. True translation required her to mentally inhabit the author's world — to understand not only what he said, but what he felt when saying it, and what he chose not to say.

A tradução demorou dois anos — o dobro do tempo habitual, e a editora esperou com uma paciência que Luísa nunca esqueceu. Quando o editor a leu, disse que era a melhor tradução que alguma vez tinha publicado. Luísa ficou contente, mas sabia que o mérito pertencia ao autor. Ela tinha apenas tentado compreendê-lo com honestidade — e essa distinção importava-lhe mais do que qualquer elogio. Compreender o outro não é um ato de inteligência. É um ato de humildade.

The translation took two years — twice the usual time, and the publisher waited with a patience Luísa never forgot. When the editor read it, he said it was the best translation he had ever published. Luísa was pleased, but she knew the credit belonged to the author. She had only tried to understand him honestly — and that distinction mattered to her more than any praise. Understanding others is not an act of intelligence. It is an act of humility.
