But developing a startup solo came at a cost that went beyond lost sleep. Miguel knew how to code; what he did not know was how to sell. He did not know how to develop a marketing strategy, nor how to build an investment dossier that would convince someone with money to take a risk. It was at a hackathon in Guimarães that everything changed. The six months that followed were the most demanding of Miguel's life. They worked from his apartment in Braga — her on the phone with schools, him developing the technical architecture, the two of them arguing until exhausted over the details of the pedagogical component. There were serious disagreements: Carolina wanted to prioritise the user experience; Miguel insisted that the solidity of the algorithm was non-negotiable. Gradually, they developed a shared language — a way of resolving conflicts without destroying the trust that held them together. That language cost them as much effort as the product itself.

The pilot launched at a secondary school in Famalicão with one hundred and twenty students. For weeks, Miguel checked the metrics every morning with a tight stomach, waiting for signs of failure. What he saw was something else: the students using the platform developed measurably stronger reading skills and, more surprisingly, developed a different relationship with learning — less anxious, more curious. Quando Miguel terminou, houve uma pausa que pareceu muito mais longa do que foi. Depois, a única pergunta: "Quanto tempo vos levou a desenvolver esta versão?" Miguel respondeu: "Seis meses." O investidor acenou devagar com a cabeça. "Rápido. Vamos falar sobre os números." Ao saírem do edifício, Miguel olhou para Carolina sem dizer nada. Tinha passado dois anos a desenvolver aquela ideia sozinho, com o café a arrefecer na caneca. Agora havia alguém do outro lado da mesa a querer saber mais. Era suficiente por um dia.

Twelve months after the hackathon, they took the train to Lisbon with the laptop and the investment dossier. The meeting room at the venture capital fund had glass walls and a view over the Tagus, and the investor listened to the pitch with an attention that gave nothing away. When Miguel finished, there was a pause that felt much longer than it was. Then, the only question: "How long did it take you to develop this version?" Miguel answered: "Six months." The investor nodded slowly. "Fast. Let's talk about the numbers." As they left the building, Miguel looked at Carolina without saying anything.
