Catarina era editora literária numa pequena editora independente em Lisboa, a que ficava num rés-do-chão da Mouraria com estantes até ao tecto e uma secretária que nunca estava arrumada. O seu trabalho consistia em ler manuscritos, sugerir alterações aos autores e decidir o que merecia ser publicado — mas Catarina diria que o seu verdadeiro trabalho era outro: ensinar aos escritores a diferença entre dizer e sugerir. As melhores frases não afirmam — sugerem. Não dizem "ele estava triste"; sugerem a tristeza através de um detalhe, um gesto, um silêncio que o leitor preenche com o que sabe da vida.

Catarina was a literary editor at a small independent publisher in Lisbon, the one on the ground floor in Mouraria with shelves up to the ceiling and a desk that was never tidy. Her work consisted of reading manuscripts, suggesting changes to authors and deciding what deserved to be published — but Catarina would say her real work was something else: teaching writers the difference between saying and suggesting. The best sentences do not state — they suggest. They do not say "he was sad"; they suggest sadness through a detail, a gesture, a silence that the reader fills with what they know of life.

Numa manhã de outubro, um jovem autor chamado Tomás trouxe-lhe o seu primeiro romance. O texto era inteligente — Catarina viu isso logo nas primeiras páginas — mas era excessivo: explicava tudo, justificava tudo, não sugeria nada. Era a escrita de alguém com medo de não ser compreendido. Catarina sugeriu cortes radicais — metade do livro, pelo menos. Tomás resistiu com a força de quem passou três anos naquilo. "E se o leitor não perceber?", perguntou. Ela respondeu sem hesitar: "O leitor não quer perceber tudo — quer descobrir. Quando tudo está explicado, já não há nada para descobrir. Sugere, não dites." Tomás ficou em silêncio. Depois reescreveu o romance quase por inteiro.

On a morning in October, a young author named Tomás brought her his first novel. The text was intelligent — Catarina saw that on the first pages — but it was excessive: it explained everything, justified everything, suggested nothing. It was the writing of someone afraid of not being understood. Catarina suggested radical cuts — at least half the book. Tomás resisted with the force of someone who had spent three years on it. "What if the reader doesn't understand?" he asked. She replied without hesitation: "The reader doesn't want to understand everything — they want to discover. When everything is explained, there is nothing left to discover. Suggest, don't dictate." Tomás fell silent. Then he rewrote the novel almost entirely.

O romance de Tomás foi publicado dois anos depois e ganhou um prémio literário. Na cerimónia, ele agradeceu a Catarina e disse que ela lhe tinha ensinado a diferença entre escrever e escrever-se. Catarina sorriu para si mesma. O que ela tinha sugerido a Tomás era, no fundo, o mesmo princípio que tentava aplicar à própria vida: não há necessidade de dizer tudo. Às vezes, o que não dizemos é o que mais sugerimos sobre quem somos.

Tomás's novel was published two years later and won a literary prize. At the ceremony, he thanked Catarina and said she had taught him the difference between writing and writing oneself into the text. Catarina smiled to herself. What she had suggested to Tomás was, at heart, the same principle she tried to apply to her own life: there is no need to say everything. Sometimes, what we do not say is what we most suggest about who we are.
