Sofia Lemos had negotiated contracts in Portugal, Spain and Morocco, but she had never negotiated with Germans. Fraunhofer Electronics wanted to establish a partnership with the family textile company where she worked as director of business development. The contract value was significant, the deadline was tight, and the German negotiation style, she quickly discovered, was radically different from the Portuguese.
At the first meeting in Lisbon, the four representatives from the German company arrived with a three-hundred-page technical analysis folder. They wanted to negotiate clause by clause, at a methodical pace and with no room for the informal conversation that Sofia habitually used to build trust. "With them, the data speaks first," the German consultant the company hired to advise her told her afterwards. "After the tables, you negotiate the rest."
