João Baptista had emigrated to Brazil at twenty-eight with a suitcase and a job offer at an architecture firm in Rio de Janeiro. Fifteen years later, he returned with a family, an impressive portfolio, and the certainty that he would settle in Lisbon for good. What he did not calculate was the difficulty of establishing himself in a country he knew from memory but which had changed profoundly in the meantime.
The Portugal João had left in 2009, in the depths of the financial crisis, was a resigned, emigrating country. The Lisbon he found fifteen years later was a city of cranes, impossible apartment prices and restaurants full of tourists where neighbourhood grocery shops had once stood. Establishing a stable life here was going to cost more than he had anticipated — literally and emotionally.
