Story opening — Portuguese with English Translation

A escola pediu-lhe o NIF.

Mark arrived from Dublin in September, with two suitcases and a new job at a language school. In the first week, everyone asked him for the same thing. The school asked him for his NIF. The phone shop asked him for his NIF. The landlord said that, without a NIF, there was no contract. Mark wrote the three letters on a piece of paper and stuck it on the fridge door.

Nunca dizia nada.

Every morning, he went down to the café in his building and ordered a milky coffee and a slice of toast. When he paid, Dona Graça, at the till, always asked him the same question: — Contribuinte? — Yes, of course — Mark would answer. He didn't know the word, but he left one more coin on the counter, just in case. Dona Graça looked at the coin, looked at him and put it in a small glass jar next to the till. She never said a word.
