Numa segunda-feira, a mãe telefonou do Porto. — Mandei-te uma encomenda. É uma surpresa. Deve chegar na quarta.
Sara lived in the centre of Leiria, on a third floor with a view of the castle. The building was old and had its problems: there was no lift, the stairs creaked and the doorbell hadn't worked since Christmas. Sara didn't mind. When her friends arrived, they called her from the street, and she went down to open the door. One Monday, her mother phoned from Porto. — I've sent you a parcel. It's a surprise. It should arrive on Wednesday.
— disse a Sara, furiosa. — Eu estive aqui o dia todo!
On Wednesday, Sara didn't leave the house. She worked at the computer, made vegetable soup and did the washing. She even switched off the radio, to hear the door better. The doorbell didn't ring. At six in the evening, she went down to the letterbox and found a CTT notice. The notice said she could collect the parcel from the post office the next day, with her ID card. Underneath, the postman had written by hand: «I rang three times.» — Three times? — said Sara, furious. — I was here all day!
