Everyday life stories in European Portuguese

147 stories from A1 to C1

The largest part of the library: stories about the ordinary business of living in Portugal. Ordering at a pastelaria, baking pastéis de nata for the first time, topping up a Viva Viagem card at Baixa-Chiado, a trip to the Algarve, renting a flat, a call to 112, an elderly neighbour who becomes a friend.

Most everyday stories are at A1 and A2, which makes them the best place to start, but the genre runs all the way to C1. At the higher levels the same daily life is looked at more closely: coming back to Portugal after years abroad, starting again after a business fails, holding two identities at once. All of them teach the vocabulary you will actually use, in the situations where you will need it.

Start with Chamo-me Ana, the first story in the learning path, or with A Melhor Receita, in which Maria tries to make pastéis de nata for her husband's birthday. Many of the A1 stories have an A2 version told in the past, which is a good way to see the past tenses at work.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.
