O Que o Henrique Trouxe

O Henrique viveu em Londres durante dois anos. Trabalhava num restaurante português no centro da cidade e enviava dinheiro para a mãe todos os meses. A mãe, a D. Beatriz, morava sozinha num apartamento no Porto, no bairro de Miragaia. Ela ligava ao filho todos os domingos à noite e perguntava sempre: «Quando é que voltas, Henriquinho?»

Henrique lived in London for two years. He worked in a Portuguese restaurant in the city centre and sent money to his mother every month. His mother, D. Beatriz, lived alone in an apartment in Porto, in the Miragaia neighbourhood. She called her son every Sunday evening and always asked: «When are you coming back, Henriquinho?»

Em março, o Henrique telefonou com uma novidade. — Mãe, vou regressar a Portugal no próximo mês. Tenho de trazer muitas coisas, por isso vou de carro até ao ferry de Dover. A D. Beatriz ficou tão contente que chorou. — Filho, podes trazer o que quiseres, desde que tragas a ti mesmo. Isso é o que eu quero.

In March, Henrique called with news. — Mum, I'm coming back to Portugal next month. I have to bring a lot of things, so I'm going by car to the Dover ferry. D. Beatriz was so happy she cried. — Son, you can bring whatever you want, as long as you bring yourself. That's what I want.

Na semana antes de regressar, o Henrique percorreu os mercados de Londres para comprar presentes. Trouxe uma caixa de chás ingleses para a mãe, que adorava chá. Trouxe também um livro sobre a história de Londres para o seu amigo Carlos, e um cachecol de lã para a tia Filomena, que sentia sempre frio. Para si mesmo, trouxe recordações de dois anos de trabalho e aprendizagem.

In the week before returning, Henrique walked through the markets of London to buy presents. He brought a box of English teas for his mother, who loved tea. He also brought a book about the history of London for his friend Carlos, and a woollen scarf for his aunt Filomena, who always felt cold. For himself, he brought memories of two years of work and learning.

O regresso foi longo. Henrique conduziu de Londres até Dover, tomou o ferry até Calais, e depois conduziu por França e Espanha até chegar ao Porto. Viajou durante dois dias. Quando entrou em Portugal pela fronteira de Vilar Formoso, sentiu um nó na garganta. Estava em casa. Trouxe o carro cheio de caixas, malas e uma planta que comprou num mercado de flores em Paris.

The return journey was long. Henrique drove from London to Dover, took the ferry to Calais, and then drove through France and Spain until he reached Porto. He travelled for two days. When he crossed into Portugal at the Vilar Formoso border, he felt a lump in his throat. He was home. He brought the car full of boxes, suitcases and a plant he had bought at a flower market in Paris.

Chegou ao Porto numa tarde de quinta-feira. A D. Beatriz estava à porta do prédio, com um avental branco — tinha estado a cozinhar o almoço do filho. Quando o viu, correu até ele e abraçou-o com força. — Filho! — disse ela. — Trouxeste boa cara! Estás magro, mas estás bem.

He arrived in Porto on a Thursday afternoon. D. Beatriz was at the building entrance, wearing a white apron — she had been cooking her son's lunch. When she saw him, she ran to him and hugged him tightly. — Son! — she said. — You look well! You're thin, but you're well.

O Henrique riu-se e começou a tirar as caixas do carro. — Mãe, trouxe tantas coisas! Ajuda-me a subir estas caixas para o andar. A D. Beatriz olhou para o carro cheio e fez os olhos grandes. — Henrique! Trouxeste a casa toda de Londres? Não precisavas de trazer tanto! — Quis trazer lembranças, mãe. Cada coisa tem uma história.

— Mum, I brought so many things! Help me take these boxes up to the flat. D. Beatriz looked at the full car with wide eyes. — Henrique! Did you bring the whole house from London? You didn't need to bring so much! — I wanted to bring memories, Mum. Each thing has a story.

Ao jantar, o Henrique contou histórias de Londres. Falou do restaurante onde trabalhava, dos colegas de diferentes países, e do bairro de Notting Hill onde vivia. Trouxe também fotografias no telemóvel — da neve em janeiro, do Natal em Trafalgar Square, e dos amigos que fez na cidade. A D. Beatriz ouvia tudo com grande atenção, de vez em quando secando os olhos com o canto do avental.

At dinner, Henrique told stories about London. He talked about the restaurant where he worked, his colleagues from different countries, and the Notting Hill neighbourhood where he lived. He also brought photos on his phone — of the snow in January, of Christmas in Trafalgar Square, and of the friends he made in the city. D. Beatriz listened to everything with great attention, from time to time wiping her eyes with the corner of her apron.

Depois do jantar, o Henrique disse que tinha uma surpresa. Voltou ao carro e trouxe a planta de Paris. Mas não só isso — trouxe também um envelope. — Mãe, durante estes dois anos, poupei algum dinheiro. Quero usar este dinheiro para renovar a tua cozinha. Já está velha e mereces uma cozinha nova.

After dinner, Henrique said he had a surprise. He went back to the car and brought the plant from Paris. But not only that — he also brought an envelope. — Mum, during these two years, I saved some money. I want to use this money to renovate your kitchen. It's already old and you deserve a new kitchen.

A D. Beatriz ficou sem palavras. Pegou no envelope com as duas mãos e olhou para o filho. — Henrique, não era preciso. Eu estou bem assim. — Não, mãe. Quero fazer isso. Ganhei bem em Londres e trouxe este dinheiro especialmente para ti. Ela abraçou-o outra vez, ainda mais forte do que antes.

D. Beatriz was speechless. She held the envelope with both hands and looked at her son. — Henrique, it wasn't necessary. I'm fine as things are. — No, Mum. I want to do this. I earned well in London and brought this money especially for you. She hugged him again, even tighter than before.

No dia seguinte, o Carlos veio visitar o Henrique. Ficaram na sala a conversar durante horas. O Henrique trouxe café e pastéis de nata que tinha comprado na pastelaria da esquina. — Então, como foi Londres? — perguntou o Carlos. — Foi difícil no início. Mas trouxe muito de lá — amizades, experiência, e uma visão diferente do mundo.

The next day, Carlos came to visit Henrique. They sat in the living room talking for hours. Henrique brought coffee and pastéis de nata he had bought at the corner pastelaria. — So, how was London? — asked Carlos. — It was hard at first. But I brought a lot from there — friendships, experience, and a different view of the world.

Semanas depois, a cozinha da D. Beatriz estava renovada — novos azulejos, um novo frigorífico, e um novo fogão. A mãe preparou um jantar especial para celebrar, com toda a família reunida. Quando todos se sentaram à mesa, a D. Beatriz levantou o copo e disse: — Brindo ao Henrique, que trouxe muito mais do que eu esperava. Trouxe alegria de volta a esta casa.

Weeks later, D. Beatriz's kitchen was renovated — new tiles, a new fridge, and a new cooker. The mother prepared a special dinner to celebrate, with the whole family gathered. When everyone sat at the table, D. Beatriz raised her glass and said: — I toast to Henrique, who brought much more than I expected. He brought joy back to this house.
