O Primeiro Dia de Trabalho

Carlos tem vinte e seis anos e começa hoje um novo emprego. Ele vai trabalhar numa empresa de turismo no centro de Lisboa. Carlos está nervoso porque nunca falou em público antes. Em casa, fala sempre com a sua família em português, mas no trabalho vai ter de falar com clientes de todo o mundo.

Carlos is twenty-six years old and starts a new job today. He is going to work at a tourism company in the centre of Lisbon. Carlos is nervous because he has never spoken in public before. At home, he always speaks with his family in Portuguese, but at work he will have to speak with clients from all over the world.

Quando chega à empresa, a recepcionista fala com ele primeiro. — Bom dia! É o novo colega Carlos? — pergunta ela. — Sim, sou eu. Bom dia — responde Carlos, um pouco tímido. — Pode esperar aqui. O director vai falar consigo em breve — diz ela com simpatia.

When he arrives at the company, the receptionist speaks with him first. "Good morning! Are you the new colleague Carlos?" she asks. "Yes, that's me. Good morning," Carlos replies, a little shy. "You can wait here. The director will speak with you shortly," she says kindly.

O director, o Sr. Nunes, vem ter com Carlos. — Bem-vindo à empresa, Carlos. Fala inglês? — pergunta ele. — Sim, falo inglês e um pouco de espanhol — responde Carlos. — Óptimo! Os nossos clientes falam muitas línguas diferentes. Vai falar com grupos de turistas todos os dias.

The director, Mr Nunes, comes to meet Carlos. "Welcome to the company, Carlos. Do you speak English?" he asks. "Yes, I speak English and a little Spanish," Carlos replies. "Excellent! Our clients speak many different languages. You will speak with groups of tourists every day."

O Sr. Nunes apresenta Carlos a toda a equipa. — Este é o Carlos, o nosso novo guia turístico. Fala inglês e espanhol — diz o director. Uma colega chamada Sofia estende a mão. — Olá Carlos! Eu falo francês e italiano. Quando não sabes falar com um cliente, vem ter comigo — diz ela.

Mr Nunes introduces Carlos to the whole team. "This is Carlos, our new tour guide. He speaks English and Spanish," says the director. A colleague called Sofia holds out her hand. "Hello Carlos! I speak French and Italian. When you don't know how to speak with a client, come to me," she says.

Ao meio-dia, Carlos almoça com Sofia e outros colegas na cantina. Falam sobre o trabalho e sobre Lisboa. — Falas de onde és? — pergunta um colega. — Sou de Coimbra. Falei sempre português ali, mas aqui preciso de falar mais línguas — diz Carlos. — Vais aprender depressa — diz Sofia.

At midday, Carlos has lunch with Sofia and other colleagues in the canteen. They talk about work and Lisbon. "Tell us where you're from?" a colleague asks. "I'm from Coimbra. I always spoke Portuguese there, but here I need to speak more languages," says Carlos. "You'll learn fast," says Sofia.

À tarde, Carlos faz a sua primeira visita guiada. Um grupo de turistas ingleses espera na entrada do museu. Carlos respira fundo e começa a falar. — Good afternoon, welcome to Lisbon! — diz ele em inglês. Os turistas sorriem. Carlos fala com eles durante duas horas e sente-se muito bem.

In the afternoon, Carlos does his first guided tour. A group of English tourists waits at the museum entrance. Carlos takes a deep breath and begins to speak. "Good afternoon, welcome to Lisbon!" he says in English. The tourists smile. Carlos speaks with them for two hours and feels very good.

No final da visita, uma turista fala com Carlos. — You speak very well! — diz ela. Carlos sorri e responde em português, para praticar: — Obrigado. Fico feliz quando posso falar com pessoas de outros países. A turista não percebe, mas ri para ele.

At the end of the tour, a tourist speaks to Carlos. "You speak very well!" she says. Carlos smiles and replies in Portuguese, to practise: "Thank you. I am happy when I can talk with people from other countries." The tourist does not understand, but smiles at him.

De volta ao escritório, Sofia pergunta: — Como correu? Falaste bem com os turistas? — Falei! Estava nervoso no início, mas depois foi fácil. Falar com pessoas é sempre melhor do que pensar em falar — responde Carlos, aliviado. Sofia ri e diz que ele vai ser um excelente guia.

Back at the office, Sofia asks: "How did it go? Did you speak well with the tourists?" "I did! I was nervous at first, but then it was easy. Speaking with people is always better than thinking about speaking," Carlos replies, relieved. Sofia laughs and says he will be an excellent guide.

No caminho para casa, Carlos vai de autocarro. Senta-se ao lado de uma senhora idosa que fala com ele espontaneamente. — Boa tarde, meu jovem. De onde é? — Sou de Coimbra mas trabalho aqui em Lisboa — responde Carlos. Os dois falam durante todo o percurso e Carlos chega a casa muito mais confiante.

On the way home, Carlos takes the bus. He sits next to an elderly lady who speaks to him spontaneously. "Good afternoon, young man. Where are you from?" "I'm from Coimbra but I work here in Lisbon," Carlos replies. The two talk for the whole journey and Carlos arrives home much more confident.

Em casa, Carlos telefona à sua mãe. — Mãe, falei com turistas ingleses hoje! Falei inglês durante duas horas! — Filho, que orgulho! E falaste bem? — pergunta a mãe. — Falei muito bem, mãe. Amanhã vou falar com um grupo alemão. Preciso de aprender alemão! — diz Carlos a rir.

At home, Carlos calls his mother. "Mum, I spoke with English tourists today! I spoke English for two hours!" "Son, how proud I am! And did you speak well?" asks his mother. "I spoke very well, Mum. Tomorrow I'll speak with a German group. I need to learn German!" Carlos says, laughing.

Antes de dormir, Carlos pensa no seu dia. Falou com o director, com Sofia, com os turistas e com a senhora do autocarro. Falar com pessoas novas é a melhor parte do trabalho. Carlos adormece com um sorriso, já com vontade de falar amanhã.

Before sleeping, Carlos thinks about his day. He spoke with the director, with Sofia, with the tourists and with the lady on the bus. Talking with new people is the best part of the job. Carlos falls asleep with a smile, already looking forward to talking tomorrow.
