O Que Levámos

A família Silva tinha uma semana de férias no Algarve. A mãe, a Conceição, começou a fazer a mala três dias antes da viagem. Ela queria levar tudo — os vestidos de verão, as sandálias, o chapéu de sol, os livros, o secador de cabelo e até as almofadas favoritas das crianças. O pai, o Rui, olhou para as malas e ficou preocupado.

The Silva family had a week of holidays in the Algarve. The mother, Conceição, started packing her suitcase three days before the trip. She wanted to take everything — the summer dresses, the sandals, the sun hat, the books, the hair dryer and even the children's favourite pillows. The father, Rui, looked at the suitcases and became worried.

— Conceição, não podemos levar tudo isso! — disse o Rui. — Temos apenas duas malas grandes e a viagem de carro já é longa. Os miúdos também querem levar as suas coisas. A Conceição suspirou. Ela sabia que o marido tinha razão, mas era difícil deixar coisas em casa. Sempre levava demasiado nas férias, e sempre voltava com metade das coisas por usar.

— Conceição, we can't take all of that! — said Rui. — We only have two big suitcases and the car journey is already long. The kids also want to take their things. Conceição sighed. She knew her husband was right, but it was hard to leave things at home. She always took too much on holiday, and always came back with half the things unused.

Os filhos, a Margarida de dez anos e o Tomás de oito, também tinham as suas prioridades. A Margarida queria levar os seus livros de banda desenhada, a raqueta de badminton e o tablet. O Tomás insistia em levar o seu cão de peluche, chamado Bolinhas, e a caixa de Lego favorita. O Rui olhou para os dois e respirou fundo.

The children, ten-year-old Margarida and eight-year-old Tomás, also had their priorities. Margarida wanted to take her comic books, the badminton racket and the tablet. Tomás insisted on taking his stuffed dog, called Bolinhas, and his favourite Lego box. Rui looked at the two of them and took a deep breath.

— Cada um leva uma mochila pequena para as suas coisas pessoais — decidiu o pai. — O que não cabe na mochila, fica em casa. A Margarida protestou imediatamente: «Mas pai! A raqueta não cabe numa mochila!» O Rui pensou um momento. — Está bem, a raqueta leva-se à parte. Mas só uma raqueta.

— Everyone takes one small backpack for their personal things — the father decided. — What doesn't fit in the backpack stays at home. Margarida protested immediately: «But Dad! The racket doesn't fit in a backpack!» Rui thought for a moment. — Alright, the racket goes separately. But only one racket.

Na manhã da partida, às seis da manhã, o Rui carregou as malas para o carro. Levaram duas malas grandes, três mochilas, a raqueta da Margarida, e uma bolsa com lanches para a viagem. A Conceição levou também um saco com cremes solares, chapéus e toalhas de praia. O Tomás levou o Bolinhas apertado contra o peito, muito feliz.

On the morning of departure, at six in the morning, Rui loaded the suitcases into the car. They took two large suitcases, three backpacks, Margarida's racket, and a bag with snacks for the journey. Conceição also took a bag with sun creams, hats and beach towels. Tomás held Bolinhas tightly against his chest, very happy.

A viagem durou quatro horas. Pararam numa área de serviço perto de Évora para tomar o pequeno-almoço. Comeram sandes de queijo e beberam sumo de laranja. O Tomás perguntou: «Mãe, levaste os biscoitos de chocolate?» A Conceição sorriu. — Claro que levei. Nunca me esqueço dos biscoitos de chocolate.

The journey took four hours. They stopped at a service area near Évora for breakfast. They ate cheese sandwiches and drank orange juice. Tomás asked: «Mum, did you bring the chocolate biscuits?» Conceição smiled. — Of course I did. I never forget the chocolate biscuits.

Chegaram ao apartamento em Lagos ao meio-dia. Era um apartamento bonito com vista para o mar. As crianças correram para a varanda e ficaram encantadas. A Conceição começou a desfazer as malas. Reparou então que se tinha esquecido de levar o carregador do telemóvel. — Ai! Não levei o carregador! — disse ela, preocupada.

They arrived at the apartment in Lagos at noon. It was a pretty apartment with a sea view. The children ran to the balcony and were delighted. Conceição began to unpack the suitcases. She then noticed she had forgotten to bring the phone charger. — Oh! I didn't bring the charger! — she said, worried.

O Rui riu-se. — Não faz mal, compramos um aqui. O que importa é que levámos a família toda, e isso é o mais importante. A Conceição olhou para os filhos a brincar na varanda e sorriu. Tinha razão. Às vezes levamos demasiadas coisas e esquecemo-nos do que realmente importa: estar juntos.

Rui laughed. — It doesn't matter, we'll buy one here. What matters is that we brought the whole family, and that's the most important thing. Conceição looked at the children playing on the balcony and smiled. He was right. Sometimes we take too many things and forget what really matters: being together.

Durante a semana, usaram apenas metade das roupas que levaram. A Margarida jogou badminton todos os dias na praia. O Tomás levou o Bolinhas para todo o lado — para a praia, para o restaurante, e até para a loja de gelados. Os outros turistas sorriam quando o viam com o cão de peluche debaixo do braço.

During the week, they only wore half the clothes they had taken. Margarida played badminton every day on the beach. Tomás took Bolinhas everywhere — to the beach, to the restaurant, and even to the ice cream shop. Other tourists smiled when they saw him with the stuffed dog under his arm.

No último dia, a Conceição fez as malas outra vez. Desta vez, levavam também lembranças — pequenas garrafas de azeite do Algarve, biscoitos de amêndoa, e uma fotografia da família tirada na praia. — Levamos estas recordações para casa — disse a Conceição — mas as melhores memórias ficam aqui, no coração.

On the last day, Conceição packed the suitcases again. This time, they were also taking souvenirs — small bottles of Algarve olive oil, almond biscuits, and a photograph of the family taken on the beach. — We're taking these memories home — said Conceição — but the best memories stay here, in the heart.

No regresso, o Tomás adormeceu no carro com o Bolinhas nos braços. A Margarida leu o seu livro de banda desenhada. O Rui conduzia em silêncio, contente. A Conceição olhou para a família e pensou: nas próximas férias, vai levar menos roupas, mas vai levar sempre o mesmo — a família, a alegria, e os biscoitos de chocolate.

On the way back, Tomás fell asleep in the car with Bolinhas in his arms. Margarida read her comic book. Rui drove in silence, content. Conceição looked at the family and thought: on the next holiday, she would take fewer clothes, but would always take the same things — the family, the joy, and the chocolate biscuits.
