A Decisão da Inês

A Inês trabalhava numa livraria no centro de Braga há três anos. Gostava do seu trabalho — conhecia todos os clientes pelo nome, sabia que livros eles preferiam, e sentia que a livraria era quase como a sua casa. Mas em fevereiro chegou um e-mail que mudou tudo: uma grande editora em Lisboa queria contratá-la como editora assistente.

Inês had been working in a bookshop in the centre of Braga for three years. She liked her work — she knew all the customers by name, knew which books they preferred, and felt that the bookshop was almost like her home. But in February an email arrived that changed everything: a large publishing house in Lisbon wanted to hire her as an assistant editor.

A Inês ficou muito agitada quando leu o e-mail. Era uma oportunidade incrível — um emprego melhor pago, numa editora conhecida, na capital. A sua amiga Joana, que trabalhava com ela na livraria, ficou entusiasmada. — Inês! Tens de aceitar! Lisboa é fantástica. Eu ficaria louca de contente no teu lugar!

Inês became very agitated when she read the email. It was an incredible opportunity — a better-paid job, in a well-known publishing house, in the capital. Her friend Joana, who worked with her at the bookshop, was enthusiastic. — Inês! You have to accept! Lisbon is fantastic. I would be over the moon in your place!

Mas a Inês não tinha certeza. Ela gostava de Braga — das ruas antigas, do mercado municipal, da pastelaria onde tomava a bica todas as manhãs. E havia outro problema. O Diogo. Eles namoravam há um ano e meio. O Diogo tinha um emprego fixo como engenheiro em Braga e não podia — nem queria — ir para Lisboa.

But Inês was not sure. She liked Braga — the old streets, the municipal market, the pastelaria where she had her bica every morning. And there was another problem. Diogo. They had been dating for a year and a half. Diogo had a steady job as an engineer in Braga and could not — nor wanted to — go to Lisbon.

Nessa tarde, a Inês encontrou-se com o Diogo no café do costume. Ficaram sentados junto à janela, com dois cafés e dois pastéis na mesa. A Inês contou-lhe a novidade. O Diogo ficou em silêncio durante um momento. — É uma grande oportunidade, Inês. Tens de pensar bem.

That afternoon, Inês met Diogo at the usual café. They sat by the window, with two coffees and two pastries on the table. Inês told him the news. Diogo was silent for a moment. — It's a great opportunity, Inês. You need to think carefully.

— Mas tu ficas aqui. O que é que acontece a nós? — perguntou a Inês. O Diogo olhou para ela com os olhos preocupados. — Não sei, Inês. Podemos tentar a distância, podemos ver. Mas a decisão é tua. Não quero ser o motivo pelo qual ficas em Braga se não é isso que queres.

— But you stay here. What happens to us? — asked Inês. Diogo looked at her with worried eyes. — I don't know, Inês. We can try long distance, we can see. But the decision is yours. I don't want to be the reason you stay in Braga if that's not what you want.

A Inês ficou acordada aquela noite a pensar. Na cama, no escuro, imaginou duas versões da sua vida. Na primeira versão, ia para Lisboa, ficava num pequeno quarto arrendado, trabalhava na editora, e via o Diogo só ao fim de semana. Na segunda versão, ficava em Braga, ficava na livraria, ficava com o Diogo, mas ficava com a dúvida de como seria a outra vida.

Inês lay awake that night thinking. In bed, in the dark, she imagined two versions of her life. In the first version, she would go to Lisbon, stay in a small rented room, work at the publishing house, and see Diogo only at weekends. In the second version, she would stay in Braga, stay at the bookshop, stay with Diogo, but remain with the doubt of what the other life would have been like.

No dia seguinte, ligou à mãe. — Mãe, tenho uma proposta de trabalho em Lisboa. Não sei o que fazer. A mãe ficou quieta um momento. — Inês, os empregos aparecem e desaparecem. Mas pergunta-te: onde ficas feliz? Não onde ganhas mais dinheiro. Onde ficas bem, no coração?

The next day, she called her mother. — Mum, I have a job offer in Lisbon. I don't know what to do. Her mother was quiet for a moment. — Inês, jobs come and go. But ask yourself: where do you feel happy? Not where you earn more money. Where are you well, in your heart?

A Inês passou o fim de semana a pensar. Sábado de manhã, foi à pastelaria da sua rua, pediu uma bica e um pastel de nata, e ficou a olhar para a Praça da República. Ficou ali durante uma hora, em silêncio, a observar as pessoas. Uma senhora idosa dava migalhas aos pombos. Dois rapazes jogavam à bola. Um pai empurrava um carrinho de bebé. Braga era a sua cidade.

Inês spent the weekend thinking. On Saturday morning, she went to the pastelaria on her street, ordered a bica and a pastel de nata, and sat looking at the Praça da República. She stayed there for an hour, in silence, watching people. An elderly lady was giving breadcrumbs to pigeons. Two boys were playing football. A father was pushing a pram. Braga was her city.

Na segunda-feira de manhã, a Inês respondeu ao e-mail da editora. Agradeceu a oportunidade e disse que não podia aceitar — que queria ficar em Braga por motivos pessoais e profissionais. Quando enviou o e-mail, ficou aliviada. Não ficou triste. Ficou em paz.

On Monday morning, Inês replied to the publishing house's email. She thanked them for the opportunity and said she could not accept — that she wanted to stay in Braga for personal and professional reasons. When she sent the email, she felt relieved. She did not feel sad. She felt at peace.

Nessa tarde, encontrou o Diogo no mesmo café. Ele ficou surpreendido quando ela lhe contou. — Tens a certeza? — perguntou ele. — Sim — disse a Inês. — Pensei muito. E percebi que quero ficar aqui. Não por ti, embora goste muito de ti. Mas porque é aqui que eu sou feliz.

That afternoon, she met Diogo at the same café. He was surprised when she told him. — Are you sure? — he asked. — Yes — said Inês. — I thought a lot. And I realised I want to stay here. Not because of you, although I care about you very much. But because this is where I am happy.

O Diogo sorriu — um sorriso grande, verdadeiro. Pegou na mão dela e ficou assim, em silêncio, por um momento. Depois disse: — Fico muito contente. E prometo que, um dia, vamos criar algo aqui em Braga que te faça sentir tão orgulhosa como o emprego de Lisboa. A Inês ficou a olhar para ele e pensou: sim, ficou a decisão certa.

Diogo smiled — a big, genuine smile. He held her hand and stayed like that, in silence, for a moment. Then he said: — I'm very glad. And I promise that one day we'll build something here in Braga that makes you feel as proud as the Lisbon job would have. Inês looked at him and thought: yes, it was the right decision to stay.
