O Presente de Aniversário

Inês tem dezanove anos e mora com os pais em Cascais. A sua avó, a D. Lurdes, faz anos amanhã. Inês quer dar-lhe o melhor presente do mundo. Mas o que é que se dá a uma avó que já tem tudo? Inês pensa muito nesta questão enquanto toma o pequeno-almoço.

Inês is nineteen years old and lives with her parents in Cascais. Her grandmother, D. Lurdes, has her birthday tomorrow. Inês wants to give her the best present in the world. But what do you give to a grandmother who already has everything? Inês thinks about this question a lot while having breakfast.

Inês telefona à sua amiga Beatriz para pedir conselho. — O que é que dás normalmente à tua avó? — pergunta Inês. — Geralmente dou-lhe flores ou bombons. Mas este ano dei-lhe um livro de receitas e ela adorou — responde Beatriz. Inês pensa que pode dar algo mais especial.

Inês calls her friend Beatriz to ask for advice. "What do you normally give your grandmother?" asks Inês. "I usually give her flowers or chocolates. But this year I gave her a recipe book and she loved it," Beatriz replies. Inês thinks she can give something more special.

Inês vai ao centro comercial de Cascais. Na primeira loja, a empregada pergunta: — Posso ajudar? — Quero dar um presente à minha avó. Ela faz oitenta anos amanhã — diz Inês. — Que bonito! Posso sugerir uma carteira ou um lenço? Damos também embrulho gratuito — diz a empregada.

Inês goes to the shopping centre in Cascais. In the first shop, the assistant asks: "Can I help?" "I want to give my grandmother a present. She turns eighty tomorrow," says Inês. "How lovely! May I suggest a purse or a scarf? We also give free gift wrapping," says the assistant.

Inês olha para as carteiras e os lenços, mas não decide nada. Sai da loja e manda uma mensagem ao pai: «Pai, o que damos à avó Lurdes este ano?» O pai responde: «A tua mãe quer dar-lhe um álbum de fotografias. Mas podemos dar juntos qualquer coisa especial.»

Inês looks at the purses and scarves, but decides nothing. She leaves the shop and messages her father: "Dad, what do we give Grandma Lurdes this year?" Her father replies: "Your mother wants to give her a photo album. But we can give something special together."

Inês tem uma ideia. A avó Lurdes sempre diz que o melhor presente é o tempo em família. Então, Inês decide dar à avó um dia especial, não uma coisa. Ela organiza um piquenique junto ao mar em Cascais para toda a família. Dá a notícia ao pai e à mãe, que ficam muito contentes.

Inês has an idea. Grandma Lurdes always says the best present is time with family. So Inês decides to give her grandmother a special day, not a thing. She organises a picnic by the sea in Cascais for the whole family. She gives the news to her father and mother, who are very pleased.

No dia do aniversário, toda a família se reúne na praia. Inês dá à avó um grande abraço. — Avó, damos-te um dia especial junto ao mar! — diz ela. A D. Lurdes fica com os olhos cheios de lágrimas. — Minha querida, este é o melhor presente que alguma vez me deram — diz a avó.

On the birthday, the whole family gathers at the beach. Inês gives her grandmother a big hug. "Grandma, we're giving you a special day by the sea!" she says. D. Lurdes' eyes fill with tears. "My darling, this is the best present anyone has ever given me," says the grandmother.

O tio Mário dá à D. Lurdes uma garrafa de vinho do Alentejo. A prima Sofia dá-lhe um ramo de flores silvestres. O pai de Inês dá-lhe o álbum de fotografias com fotos de toda a família. A avó abre cada presente com cuidado e dá um abraço a cada pessoa.

Uncle Mário gives D. Lurdes a bottle of Alentejo wine. Cousin Sofia gives her a bunch of wild flowers. Inês's father gives her the photo album with pictures of the whole family. The grandmother opens each present carefully and gives a hug to each person.

Inês dá à avó uma carta escrita à mão. Nela, conta as suas memórias favoritas com a avó. — Dei-te esta carta porque as palavras valem mais do que as coisas — explica Inês. A avó lê a carta em voz alta e todos ficam emocionados. Dão palmas quando ela termina.

Inês gives her grandmother a handwritten letter. In it, she tells her favourite memories with her grandmother. "I gave you this letter because words are worth more than things," explains Inês. The grandmother reads the letter aloud and everyone becomes emotional. They clap when she finishes.

Ao almoço, sentados na areia, comem sandes e petiscos. O tio Mário dá uma fatia de bolo de aniversário a cada pessoa. A criança mais nova da família, o Tomás, dá à bisavó um desenho que fez na escola. — Deste-me o presente mais bonito, Tomás — diz D. Lurdes com ternura.

At lunch, sitting on the sand, they eat sandwiches and petiscos. Uncle Mário gives a slice of birthday cake to each person. The youngest child in the family, Tomás, gives his great-grandmother a drawing he made at school. "You gave me the most beautiful present, Tomás," says D. Lurdes tenderly.

À tarde, a família dá um passeio pela marginal de Cascais. A avó anda devagar mas está muito feliz. Inês caminha ao lado dela e dá-lhe a mão. — Obrigada por este dia, Inês. Deste-me muito mais do que eu esperava — diz a avó. — Nós é que te agradecemos, avó — responde Inês.

In the afternoon, the family goes for a walk along the seafront of Cascais. The grandmother walks slowly but is very happy. Inês walks next to her and holds her hand. "Thank you for this day, Inês. You gave me much more than I expected," says the grandmother. "It is we who thank you, Grandma," Inês replies.

Quando a família se despede, D. Lurdes diz ao grupo: — Cada um de vós deu-me algo diferente hoje. Mas o que vos dou eu é o meu amor. E esse, nunca acaba — diz ela com um sorriso. Inês percebe que dar e receber amor é o presente mais bonito de todos.

When the family says goodbye, D. Lurdes says to the group: "Each one of you gave me something different today. But what I give you is my love. And that never ends," she says with a smile. Inês understands that giving and receiving love is the most beautiful present of all.
