Sei Falar Português!

Tom é inglês e estuda português há seis meses. Hoje tem uma prova. "Sabes as conjugações?", pergunta a sua amiga Inês. "Sei algumas", diz Tom. "Sei dizer 'bom dia', 'obrigado', 'onde fica?', 'quanto custa?' e 'não percebo'." Inês sorri. "Sabes mais do que pensas."

Tom is English and has been studying Portuguese for six months. Today he has a test. "Do you know the conjugations?" asks his friend Inês. "I know some," says Tom. "I know how to say 'good morning', 'thank you', 'where is it?', 'how much does it cost?' and 'I don't understand'." Inês smiles. "You know more than you think."

Na prova, o professor faz perguntas. "Sabes o nome desta cidade?" "Sei. É Lisboa." "Sabes como se diz 'library' em português?" Tom pensa. "Sei! É 'biblioteca'." O professor sorri. "Sabes muito bem." Tom fica surpreendido. Não sabia que sabia tanto.

In the test, the teacher asks questions. "Do you know the name of this city?" "I do. It's Lisbon." "Do you know how to say 'library' in Portuguese?" Tom thinks. "I do! It's 'biblioteca'." The teacher smiles. "You know very well." Tom is surprised. He didn't know he knew so much.

Depois da aula, Tom vai tomar café com os colegas e falam em português. Tom não sabe tudo, mas sabe o suficiente para comunicar. "Sabes o que é o melhor?", diz Inês. "Cada dia que passa, sabes mais. E um dia vais saber tudo." Tom ri. "Não sei se isso é possível. Mas vou tentar."

After class, Tom goes for coffee with his classmates and they speak in Portuguese. Tom doesn't know everything, but he knows enough to communicate. "Do you know what's the best part?" says Inês. "Each day that passes, you know more. And one day you'll know everything." Tom laughs. "I don't know if that's possible. But I'll try."
