Rui Abre o seu Café

Rui tem trinta e dois anos e um sonho: abrir o seu próprio café. Encontrou um espaço pequeno em Mouraria, assinou o contrato e começou a trabalhar. Agora falta pouco. Os vizinhos perguntam todos os dias: "Quando é que abres?" "Abro na sexta-feira", diz Rui. "Às nove da manhã."

Rui is thirty-two years old and has a dream: to open his own café. He found a small space in Mouraria, signed the contract and started working. Now there's not long to go. The neighbours ask every day: "When are you opening?" "I'm opening on Friday," says Rui. "At nine in the morning."

Na quinta-feira, Rui e o irmão limpam, pintam e arrumam. "Quem abre a porta amanhã?", pergunta o irmão. "Eu abro", diz Rui. "Quero ser eu a abrir." Às onze da noite, tudo está pronto. Rui olha para o espaço. As janelas abrem para a rua. A luz entra. "Está bonito", diz ele.

On Thursday, Rui and his brother clean, paint and tidy up. "Who's opening the door tomorrow?" his brother asks. "I'm opening it," says Rui. "I want to be the one to open it." At eleven at night, everything is ready. Rui looks at the space. The windows open onto the street. The light comes in. "It looks lovely," he says.

Na sexta-feira de manhã, Rui chega cedo. Abre as janelas, liga a máquina de café e abre a porta. A primeira cliente entra — é a vizinha do lado. "Finalmente abres! Passo aqui todos os dias e via a placa 'em breve'." "Pois", diz Rui com um sorriso. "Em breve foi hoje."

On Friday morning, Rui arrives early. He opens the windows, turns on the coffee machine and opens the door. The first customer comes in — it's the next-door neighbour. "You're finally opening! I walk past here every day and saw the 'coming soon' sign." "Indeed," says Rui with a smile. "Coming soon was today."
