Uma Viagem ao Algarve

João estava nervoso. Amanhã ia viajar do Porto para o Algarve pela primeira vez em seis anos. Os seus pais viviam em Lagos e ele não ia lá desde o Natal anterior. "Vou de comboio", disse ele ao seu amigo Rui. "É uma viagem longa, mas quero ver o campo."

João was nervous. Tomorrow he was going to travel from Porto to the Algarve for the first time in six years. His parents lived in Lagos and he hadn't been there since the previous Christmas. "I'm going by train," he told his friend Rui. "It's a long journey, but I want to see the countryside."

De manhã cedo, João foi à estação de Campanhã. O comboio ia partir às oito horas. Havia muitas pessoas na plataforma. Muitas famílias iam de férias para o sul. As crianças corriam e riam. João sorriu. Ele também ia de férias, de certa forma.

Early in the morning, João went to Campanhã station. The train was going to depart at eight o'clock. There were many people on the platform. Many families were going on holiday to the south. The children ran and laughed. João smiled. He was also going on holiday, in a way.

O comboio foi lento mas confortável. João passou por Coimbra, Lisboa e Faro. Em cada cidade, algumas pessoas iam embora e novas pessoas vinham. Numa paragem, uma senhora idosa sentou-se ao lado dele. "Onde é que vai?", perguntou ela. "Vou a Lagos", respondeu João. "Ver os meus pais."

The train was slow but comfortable. João passed through Coimbra, Lisbon and Faro. At each city, some people left and new people arrived. At one stop, an elderly lady sat next to him. "Where are you going?" she asked. "I'm going to Lagos," João replied. "To see my parents."

"Que bom!", disse a senhora. "A família é tudo." Ela também ia ao Algarve visitar a sua filha. "Os meus netos adoram a praia. Vão todos os dias ao mar." João olhou pela janela. O céu estava azul e o sol já estava quente. O Algarve ia ser maravilhoso.

"How lovely!" said the lady. "Family is everything." She was also going to the Algarve to visit her daughter. "My grandchildren love the beach. They go to the sea every day." João looked out of the window. The sky was blue and the sun was already warm. The Algarve was going to be wonderful.

Quando o comboio chegou a Lagos, os pais de João estavam à espera na estação. A mãe correu para ele. "João! Finalmente vieste!" O pai apertou-lhe a mão com força. "Como foi a viagem?" "Foi ótima", disse João. "Da próxima vez vou mais cedo."

When the train arrived in Lagos, João's parents were waiting at the station. His mother ran to him. "João! You finally came!" His father shook his hand firmly. "How was the journey?" "It was great," said João. "Next time I'll go earlier."

Nessa semana, foram todos juntos à praia, ao mercado e aos restaurantes típicos. João comeu marisco, tomou banho no mar e dormiu bem. No último dia, olhou para o oceano e pensou: "Porque é que não vou mais vezes ao Algarve? Vou voltar no próximo mês."

That week, they all went together to the beach, the market and traditional restaurants. João ate seafood, swam in the sea and slept well. On the last day, he looked at the ocean and thought: "Why don't I go to the Algarve more often? I'll come back next month."
