Imprimiu o e-mail e guardou-o numa pasta.

Carolina checked everything twice: the gas, the windows, the front door. Sometimes three times. In July, she made a booking at a hostel in the Ribeira, in Porto, for the weekend of the ninth of October. An e-mail came straight away: «Booking confirmed». She read it ten times. The name was right, the day was right, the month was right, and it even had the bed number: seven. She printed the e-mail and kept it in a folder.

No dia nove, apanhou o comboio para o Porto. No caminho, ainda confirmou a morada três vezes. A Carolina disse o nome. O rapaz procurou no computador. Procurou outra vez, letra a letra.

On the ninth, she caught the train to Porto. On the way, she checked the address three more times. She arrived in the rain and went down the granite steps to the Ribeira, with her rucksack on her back and the seagulls screaming above her. The hostel's reception was a narrow counter with a bowl of oranges. Behind the computer sat a young man with a red beard. Carolina gave her name. The young man searched on the computer. He searched again, letter by letter. — I've got nothing under your name — he said. — And tonight we're full. There's a football match.
