A amiga Catarina ficou surpreendida. "Lês Saramago? E percebes?" "Lia devagar", disse Mariana, "e quando lia devagar, percebia tudo."
Mariana read a lot. She read on the metro, in cafés and in bed before sleeping. That summer, she decided to read all of José Saramago's books. Her friend Catarina was surprised. "You read Saramago? And you understand it?" "I read slowly," said Mariana, "and when I read slowly, I understood everything."
E o terceiro. A Catarina perguntou um dia: "Já leste três?" "Li", disse Mariana. "E vou ler mais."
Mariana read the first book in two weeks. It was difficult — Saramago used little punctuation — but she read it to the end. Then she read the second. And the third. Catarina asked one day: "Have you already read three?" "I have," said Mariana. "And I'm going to read more."
No final do verão, Mariana tinha lido sete livros do Saramago.
By the end of summer, Mariana had read seven of Saramago's books. Catarina, who had never read Saramago, asked to borrow one. "Which one should I read first?" "Read 'The Gospel According to Jesus Christ'," said Mariana. "It was the first one I read — and the one I liked the most."
