That day, Tom had a Portuguese test. Before going in, Inês asked him if he knew the conjugations. "I know some," he said. But he wasn't sure if he was ready. When the teacher asked the first question, Tom knew the answer straight away: "It's Lisbon."
O professor sorriu. Soube-se logo que Tom tinha estudado.
The second question was harder. "How do you say 'library'?" Tom thought for a moment. He knew that he knew — he just had to remember. "Biblioteca!" he finally said. The teacher smiled. It was immediately apparent that Tom had studied.
After the test, Tom went for coffee with his classmates and spoke Portuguese all afternoon. He didn't know everything, but he knew enough. Later, he wrote in his diary: "Today I found out I know more Portuguese than I thought. Six months ago I couldn't say almost anything."
