O Avô Escreveu para Sofia

O avô Francisco escrevia cartas à mão a todos os netos, todos os meses. Não escrevia e-mails nem mensagens — escrevia em papel creme, com uma caneta de tinta azul. O neto Tomás guardava todas as cartas numa caixa de sapatos debaixo da cama.

Grandfather Francisco wrote letters by hand to all his grandchildren, every month. He didn't write emails or messages — he wrote on cream paper, with a blue ink pen. His grandson Tomás kept all the letters in a shoebox under his bed.

Um dia, a prima Sofia disse ao Tomás que nunca ninguém lhe escrevia cartas. Naquela tarde, Tomás escreveu ao avô a pedir-lhe que também escrevesse à Sofia. O avô respondeu logo: "Claro. Escreve-me o endereço." Tomás escreveu-lho nessa mesma tarde.

One day, his cousin Sofia told Tomás that nobody ever wrote her letters. That afternoon, Tomás wrote to his grandfather asking him to write to Sofia too. His grandfather replied straight away: "Of course. Write me the address." Tomás wrote it to him that same afternoon.

Uma semana depois, Sofia recebeu uma carta. Era do avô Francisco — duas páginas, em letra pequena e cuidada. Sofia leu-a três vezes. Depois escreveu de volta. E assim começou uma correspondência que durou anos: o avô escrevia, Sofia escrevia, e nenhum dos dois escrevia depressa.

A week later, Sofia received a letter. It was from Grandfather Francisco — two pages, in small, careful handwriting. Sofia read it three times. Then she wrote back. And so began a correspondence that lasted years: her grandfather wrote, Sofia wrote, and neither of them wrote in a hurry.
