Full Story — Portuguese with English Translation

Rita ouvia música o dia todo — no metro, a cozinhar, a limpar. Naquela tarde, a amiga Leonor disse que nunca tinha ouvido fado. "Nunca ouvi", disse. Rita ficou surpreendida. "Em Portugal, toda a gente ouve fado. Ouve-se na rádio, nos restaurantes, nas festas. Como é que nunca ouviste?"

Rita listened to music all day — on the metro, while cooking, while cleaning. That afternoon, her friend Leonor said she had never listened to fado. "I've never heard it," she said. Rita was surprised. "In Portugal, everyone listens to fado. You hear it on the radio, in restaurants, at parties. How have you never heard it?"

Rita pôs fado a tocar. "Ouve", disse ela. Leonor fechou os olhos e ouviu. Era a voz de Amália Rodrigues. Rita também ouvia, em silêncio, ao lado da amiga. Ouvia aquela música há anos, mas naquela tarde ouviu-a de forma diferente — através dos olhos de alguém que a ouvia pela primeira vez.

Rita put fado on. "Listen," she said. Leonor closed her eyes and listened. It was the voice of Amália Rodrigues. Rita also listened, in silence, next to her friend. She had been listening to that music for years, but that afternoon she heard it differently — through the eyes of someone hearing it for the first time.

Quando a música acabou, Leonor ficou quieta. "Ouvi e percebi", disse finalmente. "Nunca pensei que ia gostar assim." Rita sorriu. Ela sabia que acontecia sempre assim — as pessoas ouviam o fado uma vez e nunca mais o esqueciam.

When the music ended, Leonor was quiet. "I heard it and I understood," she finally said. "I never thought I would like it this much." Rita smiled. She knew it always happened like that — people listened to fado once and never forgot it.
