Portuguese history and culture stories

29 stories from A1 to C2

Portugal's past, told as stories: life in a medieval castle, Vasco da Gama reaching India in 1498, the Padeira de Aljubarrota, the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and the Marquês de Pombal's rebuilding of the city, the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, and the origins of fado.

The genre also covers Portuguese culture and ideas. At A1 and A2 that means music, above all fado; at C1 it means essays in story form, from a controversial installation at Serralves in Porto to a historian writing the forgotten rural workers of the Alentejo back into history and a scholar questioning the official story of Portugal's colonial past.

Start with O Castelo Medieval at A1, then Vasco da Gama e o Caminho para a Índia at A2. At B1 there are two stories about the Carnation Revolution, a good pair to read one after the other. It is a good way to learn the language and the country at the same time.

Each story page shows the opening in Portuguese with the English under every paragraph, and a glossary of key words. The whole story is in the reader, with audio for every sentence and tap-to-translate on every word.
