A Revolução dos Cravos

Durante quase cinquenta anos, Portugal viveu sob uma ditadura. O Estado Novo proibiu os partidos políticos e perseguiu quem lutava pelos direitos civis. Muitos portugueses lutavam em silêncio, com medo.

For almost fifty years, Portugal lived under a dictatorship. The Estado Novo banned political parties and persecuted those who fought for civil rights. Many Portuguese fought in silence, out of fear.

Na madrugada de 25 de Abril de 1974, tudo mudou. Um grupo de militares — o Movimento das Forças Armadas — lutou para derrubar o regime. Às 0h25, uma estação de rádio transmitiu "Grândola, Vila Morena" — o sinal para agir.

In the early hours of 25th April 1974, everything changed. A group of soldiers fought to bring down the regime. At 0:25 a.m., a radio station broadcast "Grândola, Vila Morena" — the signal to act.

Os tanques saíram para as ruas de Lisboa. Mas a revolução foi praticamente pacífica. A população saiu a apoiar os militares. Uma florista chamada Celeste Caeiro distribuiu cravos vermelhos aos soldados, que os colocaram nos canos das espingardas.

The tanks rolled out onto the streets of Lisbon. But the revolution was practically peaceful. The population came out to support the soldiers. A florist called Celeste Caeiro gave red carnations to the soldiers, who placed them in their rifle barrels.

Em poucas horas, a ditadura caiu. Portugal lutou pela sua liberdade sem violência generalizada — uma raridade na história. A Revolução dos Cravos mostrou que, às vezes, é possível lutar com flores em vez de balas.

Within a few hours, the dictatorship fell. Portugal fought for its freedom without widespread violence — a rarity in history. The Carnation Revolution showed that sometimes it is possible to fight with flowers instead of bullets.
