O Que a Memória Guarda

Quando a avó Benedita morreu, Inês foi a Guimarães ajudar a família a organizar a casa. Nunca foi uma tarefa fácil — cada gaveta, cada armário, cada canto guardava algo que a fazia lembrar. Lembrou-se da manhã em que a avó lhe ensinou a fazer malassadas, das tardes a ouvir fado na sala, do cheiro a lavanda que sempre havia nos lençóis. Coisas que Inês julgava ter esquecido voltaram todas ao mesmo tempo.

When her grandmother Benedita died, Inês went to Guimarães to help the family organise the house. It was never an easy task — every drawer, every cupboard, every corner held something that made her remember. She remembered the morning her grandmother taught her to make malassadas, the afternoons listening to fado in the living room, the smell of lavender that was always in the sheets. Things Inês thought she had forgotten all came back at the same time.

Num dos armários, Inês encontrou uma caixa com cartas. Eram cartas que a avó tinha escrito ao avô durante os anos em que ele trabalhou em França. Nunca as tinha enviado — lembrava-se dele tão bem que não precisava de as mandar. Guardou-as na mesma. Inês leu duas ou três e lembrou-se de algo que a mãe lhe dissera: "A tua avó sempre soube amar em silêncio."

In one of the wardrobes, Inês found a box with letters. They were letters her grandmother had written to her grandfather during the years he worked in France. She had never sent them — she remembered him so well that she did not need to send them. She kept them all the same. Inês read two or three and remembered something her mother had once told her: "Your grandmother always knew how to love in silence."

No regresso a Lisboa, Inês ia a lembrar-se de tudo. Lembrava-se da avó a rezar de manhã, das mãos ásperas que faziam pão, da voz baixa que cantava enquanto cozinhava. Percebeu que a memória não guarda apenas factos — guarda cheiros, texturas, sons. E que lembrar uma pessoa que já não está é uma forma de a manter viva.

On the way back to Lisbon, Inês kept remembering everything. She remembered her grandmother praying in the morning, the rough hands that made bread, the quiet voice that sang while cooking. She realised that memory does not only keep facts — it keeps smells, textures, sounds. And that remembering someone who is no longer here is a way of keeping them alive.
