Ricardo cresceu a acreditar nisso.

Ricardo was the kind of person who never asked for help. He needed to solve his own problems — that was how his father had taught him, with the phrase he repeated like a principle: "A man who asks for help is a man who has failed." Ricardo grew up believing this. On a cold Monday morning in January, he was taking the Alfa Pendular train from Lisbon to Coimbra for an important client meeting when the train slowed, then stopped completely, somewhere between Santarém and Entroncamento. The conductor walked calmly through the carriages and announced there was a breakdown and that they would need to wait at least an hour.

Ricardo looked at his phone and realised he was going to miss the meeting. He had two percent battery and urgently needed a charger — which was, naturally, forgotten in the bag he had left at home. He sat there, watching the screen dim, feeling the panic rise. A woman sitting next to him — her name was Beatriz, as he later learned — noticed his expression and said, without ceremony: "Do you need a charger?" Before Ricardo could say no, she had already taken hers from her bag. While the phone charged, Beatriz helped him think through alternatives: there was a bus leaving Santarém every hour, or he could try to get a lift, or have the meeting by video call. Ricardo was not used to needing anyone's help. It was uncomfortable. But it was necessary.

Correu bem.

The meeting ended up happening by video call, sitting on the stationary train in the middle of open countryside, laptop on his knees and the Ribatejo fields outside the window. It went well. Better than he had expected. When the train finally arrived in Coimbra, Ricardo and Beatriz said goodbye on the platform with a handshake. "Thank you," he said, and meant more than the word. On the way back to Lisbon, sitting alone in that same carriage, he thought about what had happened. All his life he had believed he did not need anyone — that needing was weakness. But perhaps he did need. Perhaps we all need each other far more than we want to admit.
