A Grande Decisão

Tiago tinha a proposta de emprego à sua frente há três semanas, impressa em folha A4, dobrada e desdobrada tantas vezes que as margens começavam a desfazer-se. Ainda não tinha decidido. A empresa era boa, o salário era o dobro do que ganhava em Lisboa, e Londres era uma cidade que sempre quis conhecer. Mas decidir sair do país não era simples — era como puxar um fio e ver tudo descosido ao mesmo tempo. A namorada, os pais, os amigos de toda a vida, o bairro, a tasca da esquina. Tudo o que conhecia estava em Portugal. Quanto mais pensava, menos conseguia decidir.

Tiago had the job offer in front of him for three weeks, printed on A4 paper, folded and unfolded so many times the edges were starting to come apart. He still had not decided. The company was good, the salary was double what he earned in Lisbon, and London was a city he had always wanted to get to know. But deciding to leave the country was not simple — it was like pulling a thread and watching everything unravel at once. His girlfriend, his parents, his lifelong friends, the neighbourhood, the corner tasca. Everything he knew was in Portugal. The more he thought, the less he could decide.

Pediu conselho à namorada, Filipa. Ela ouviu-o durante muito tempo sem interromper. Depois disse: "Não podes decidir por mim, nem eu por ti. Mas posso dizer-te o que vejo: vejo uma pessoa com medo de arriscar, não uma pessoa que realmente quer ficar." Tiago ficou em silêncio. Sabia que ela tinha razão. O problema não era decidir entre Lisboa e Londres — era decidir entre a segurança do conhecido e a incerteza do novo.

He asked his girlfriend Filipa for advice. She listened to him for a long time without interrupting. Then she said: "You can't decide for me, nor can I for you. But I can tell you what I see: I see a person afraid to take risks, not a person who genuinely wants to stay." Tiago fell silent. He knew she was right. The problem was not deciding between Lisbon and London — it was deciding between the security of the familiar and the uncertainty of the new.

Na manhã seguinte, às seis e meia, antes de o sol entrar pela janela, Tiago abriu o computador e escreveu o e-mail a aceitar o emprego. Enviou-o antes de poder mudar de ideias. Depois ligou à mãe. Ela ficou em silêncio durante alguns segundos, e depois chorou — não muito, só um pouco — e disse que estava orgulhosa. Mais tarde nesse dia, a Filipa abraçou-o e disse que ia visitá-lo todos os meses, e que queriam que ele fosse feliz. Tiago sentiu o peso da decisão e o alívio ao mesmo tempo. Nenhuma decisão importante é fácil. Mas às vezes decidir é o único caminho para descobrir quem realmente somos.

The next morning, at half past six, before the sun came through the window, Tiago opened his laptop and wrote the email accepting the job. He sent it before he could change his mind. Then he called his mother. She was silent for a few seconds, and then cried — not much, just a little — and said she was proud. Later that day, Filipa hugged him and said she would visit every month, and that they wanted him to be happy. Tiago felt the weight of the decision and the relief at the same time. No important decision is easy. But sometimes deciding is the only path to discovering who we truly are.
