O Sotaque do Alentejo

Ana tinha trinta e dois anos quando aceitou um projeto de arquitetura em Évora. Era para restaurar um edifício do século dezasseis no centro histórico — paredes de granito cobertas de limo, janelas com os caixilhos apodrecidos, um pátio interior cheio de silêncio. Um trabalho incrível. Mas ela percebia que ia ser difícil, e não só pela razão técnica. Lisboa era a sua cidade: o ritmo acelerado, o ruído, a luz cinzenta do Tejo. O Alentejo era outro mundo.

Ana was thirty-two years old when she accepted an architecture project in Évora. It was to restore a sixteenth-century building in the historic centre — granite walls covered in moss, window frames rotted through, an interior courtyard full of silence. An incredible job. But she understood it was going to be difficult, and not just for technical reasons. Lisbon was her city: the fast pace, the noise, the grey light of the Tagus. The Alentejo was another world.

A primeira dificuldade foi o ritmo. Em Lisboa, tudo era rápido. Percebeu isso na primeira reunião com o mestre de obras, o Senhor Augusto. Ele falava devagar, com pausas longas. Ana, habituada ao ritmo acelerado da capital, não percebia se ele estava a concordar ou a discordar. "Percebo o que diz", dizia ele, assentindo com a cabeça. Mas depois não fazia nada.

The first difficulty was the pace. In Lisbon, everything was fast. She understood this in the first meeting with the site foreman, Senhor Augusto. He spoke slowly, with long pauses. Ana, used to the fast pace of the capital, couldn't understand whether he was agreeing or disagreeing. "I understand what you're saying," he would say, nodding. But then he did nothing.
