A Avó Espera o Neto

A Amália está de pé desde as sete. Vive sozinha numa casa pequena em Évora com uma gata chamada Pinta. Hoje o neto, o Rodrigo, chega de Londres. Vive lá há oito anos. Ela fez caldo verde, comprou pão na padaria da esquina e pôs lençóis lavados na cama do quarto de hóspedes. Está tudo pronto. São dez e meia da manhã. Ele disse que chega às três.

Amália has been up since seven. She lives alone in a small house in Évora with a cat called Pinta. Today her grandson Rodrigo is coming from London. He's been living there for eight years. She made caldo verde, she bought bread from the bakery on the corner, and she put clean sheets on the spare bed. Everything is ready. It's half past ten in the morning. He said he'd arrive at three.

Às duas e meia, o telefone toca. "Avó, sou eu. Chego às três, como disse." "Ótimo. A sopa está pronta. A Pinta já está sentada à porta — acho que ela sabe." "Ela sabe sempre. Até já, avó." A Amália desliga e olha para o relógio. Trinta minutos. Veste o casaco de malha bom, o azul com os botões, e senta-se à janela. A Pinta salta para o parapeito.

At half past two, the phone rings. "Avó, it's me. I arrive at three, like I said." "Good, good. The soup's ready. Pinta's sitting by the door already — I think she knows." "She always knows. See you soon, avó." Amália hangs up and looks at the clock. Thirty minutes. She puts on her good cardigan, the blue one with the buttons, and sits by the window. Pinta jumps onto the windowsill.

Três horas. Não chega ninguém. Três e meia. Ninguém. Às quatro, o telefone toca outra vez. "Avó, ouve. O avião chegou atrasado. Só chego a Évora às seis agora. Desculpa." "Às seis? A sopa arrefece, Rodrigo." "Eu sei, avó. Aquece outra vez. Estou a chegar." Ela aquece a sopa. Pega na Pinta e fala com ela. "Este nunca chega quando diz que chega. Mas chega. Chega sempre."

Three o'clock. No one arrives. Half past three. No one. At four, the phone rings again. "Avó, listen. The plane arrived late. I only arrive in Évora at six now. I'm sorry." "Six? The soup gets cold, Rodrigo." "I know, avó. Heat it up again. I'm coming." She heats up the soup. She picks up Pinta and talks to her. "He never arrives when he says he does, this one. But he arrives. He always arrives."

Às seis e meia, outra chamada. "Avó, não fiques chateada comigo. O autocarro de Lisboa avariou em Vendas Novas. Só chego às nove agora." A Amália senta-se devagar. "Às nove da noite, Rodrigo?" "Eu chego, avó. Prometo." Ela põe a sopa no frigorífico. Põe o pão no balcão com um pano por cima. Desliga a luz da cozinha e senta-se na sala escura com a Pinta no colo. A rua está silenciosa. Toda a gente chega a casa a esta hora. Toda a gente, menos o Rodrigo.

At half past six, another call. "Avó, don't be cross with me. The bus from Lisbon broke down in Vendas Novas. I only arrive at nine now." Amália sits down slowly. "Nine o'clock at night, Rodrigo?" "I'll get there, avó. I promise." She puts the soup in the fridge. She lays the bread on the counter with a cloth over it. She turns off the kitchen light and sits in the dark living room with Pinta on her lap. The street is quiet. Everyone arrives home at this hour. Everyone except Rodrigo.

Às nove e dez, alguém bate à porta. A Pinta salta do colo e corre. A Amália levanta-se, mais devagar do que antigamente, e abre. O Rodrigo está à porta com uma mala e um sorriso largo. Está mais alto do que ela se lembra. "Avó." "Chegas às três, disseste." "Eu sei." "Depois chegas às seis." "Eu sei." "Depois às nove." Ele pousa a mala e abraça-a. Ela sente cheiro a avião e a café e a qualquer coisa que ainda é o neto dela por baixo de tudo. "Entra. A sopa está no frigorífico."

At ten past nine, someone knocks on the door. Pinta jumps off and runs. Amália gets up, slower than she used to, and opens it. Rodrigo is standing there with a suitcase and a grin. He's taller than she remembers. "Avó." "You arrive at three, you said." "I know." "Then you arrive at six." "I know." "Then nine." He puts the suitcase down and hugs her. She smells aeroplane and coffee and something that's still her grandson underneath it all. "Come in. The soup's in the fridge."

Sentam-se à mesa da cozinha. A sopa está quente outra vez. O Rodrigo come como se não comesse há dois dias. A Amália olha para ele e não diz muito. Depois da segunda tigela, ele pousa a colher. "Avó, os aviões não atrasam sempre. Desta vez atrasei-me eu. Quase não vim." Ela olha para ele. "Mas chegas. Chegas sempre." Ele acena devagar. "Mesmo atrasado." Ela estica o braço e aperta-lhe a mão. "O que importa é que chegas, Rodrigo. Mesmo atrasado. Mesmo às nove da noite. Chegas." A Pinta ronrona debaixo da mesa. A cozinha está quente.

They sit at the kitchen table. The soup is hot again. Rodrigo eats like he hasn't eaten in two days. Amália watches him and doesn't say much. After the second bowl, he puts the spoon down. "Avó, the planes don't always run late. This time it was me who was late. I almost didn't come." She looks at him. "But you arrive. You always arrive." He nods slowly. "Even late." She reaches across and squeezes his hand. "What matters is that you arrive, Rodrigo. Even late. Even at nine at night. You arrive." Pinta purrs under the table. The kitchen is warm.
